Coral Gables, FL (www.hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami men’s tennis team (19-3), ranked 11th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, will be one of 16 regional host sites for the 2001 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championship, May 12-13, at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on the Coral Gables campus.
“This is a big step for our program,” said Miami head coach Jay Berger who’s team was 15-2 at home this season. “It is a tremendous advantage to host a regional. Winning on the road is difficult, especially in the NCAA Tournament.”
Miami, which is making its fourth straight NCAA tournament appearance and 18th overall since 1977, will be joined at the Coral Gables regional by No. 15 Alabama (19-9), No. 46 Minnesota (12-11) and No. 71 Charleston Southern (18-3).
The Hurricanes (BIG EAST) and Charleston Southern (Big South) earned bids into the 2001 NCAA Tournament by claiming their respective conference tournament championships. Alabama and Minnesota were at-large selections.
Alabama, the No. 2 seed, will meet No. 3 seed Minnesota on Saturday, May 12 at 10 a.m. with the top-seeded Hurricanes facing No. 4 seed Charleston Southern at 2 p.m. The winners will meet Sunday at noon. The winner of the four-team regional will advance to the Sweet Sixteen, May 19-22, in Athens, GA.
The Hurricanes and Charleston Southern will meet for the second time this season. Miami defeated Charleston Southern, 7-0, on March 19 at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Additionally, Miami No. 1 singles player Michael Lang earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Singles Championship beginning May 23. Lang, a senior from Sarasota, went 28-8 this season, including a 17-3 dual match record, and is currently ranked 46th in the latest ITA poll.
” Mike has done a tremendous job for us this year and deserved to make the singles draw,” commented Berger. “For what he has done for this program and our team, I could not be any more excited for him.”
