Women's Tennis Defeats Florida State 4-3

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – Miami’s Alanna Broderick and Bettina Hafner each scored three-set victories to rally the women’s tennis team (6-2) past 33rd-ranked Florida State, 4-3, at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Broderick, a senior from St. Andrew, Jamaica, sealed the victory for the 40th-ranked Hurricanes with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 upset victory over FSU’s 68th-ranked Alida Gallovits at the No. 1 singles position.
With FSU (3-4) ahead 3-2 in the match, Hafner, a freshman from Ulm, Germany, came back in the third set to earn a 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 win over the Seminoles’ Christina Denny at the No. 3 slot. Hafner, ranked 81st, was down 5-2 in the final set before forcing a tiebreaker.
Miami began the afternoon by taking the doubles point with the Seminoles with wins at the No. 1 and 3 positions. Broderick and Igne deVilliers won at No. 1 doubles, 8-4, over Nanette Duxin and Gallovits. Sihem Bennacer and Hafner defeated Marina Raic and Natalie Carratala, 8-5, at No. 3 doubles.
Following the doubles portion of the match, FSU won at No. 4 and No. 6 singles to move ahead 2-1 in the match. Duxin defeated Marcy Hora, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 4, while Samantha Schoeffel won over Bennacer, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.
Miami tied the match, 2-2, with 99th-ranked Katia Bogomolova’s straight set victory, 6-2, 6-1, over Jessica Balbuena at No. 2.
In the first of three three-setters on the day, FSU’s Raic defeated UM’s Lauren Scaglione, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, at No. 5 singles to put the Hurricanes down 3-2.
With the victory, UM’s moves to 12-2 all-time against the Seminoles and avenged last season’s 5-1 loss in Tallahassee.
The Hurricanes will next face BIG EAST foe Virginia Tech on March 4 at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
