Women's Tennis Travels To The Rolex Regionals

CORAL GABLES, Fla.–The University of Miami women’s tennis team will travel to Mobile, Ala. to participate in the Southern Regional Championships this weekend.
Matches will be played at Mobile Tennis Center from Nov. 3-6.
Undoubtedly, the most-talented region of women’s intercollegiate tennis, the Southern Championships will see players from national champion Georgia, host South Alabama and other SEC powerhouses such as Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Mississippi and Mississippi State. Other participants include UAB, Florida State, Georgia Tech and South Florida.
The tournament will include an A&B Draw in Singles and A&B in Doubles. At stake in the tournament, are spots in the third leg of the ITA Grand Slam. The singles champion and runner-up and the doubles champion will advance to the 2001 Rolex National Indoor Championships.
Some of the Top 30 national singles competitors who are expected to participate include #2 Aarthi Venkatesan of Georgia, #5 Whitney Laiho of Florida, #16 Jessica Lehnhoff of Florida, #22 Lori Grey of Georgia, and #28 Julie DeRoo of Ole Miss. The pairing of Lehnhoff/Laiho of Florida is ranked sixth nationally in doubles.
Senior Katia Bogomolova and sophomore Lauren Scaglione lead the Hurricanes with fall records of 6-1, and 7-1 respectively.
Scaglione’s only loss came at the hands of Bogomolova in the Hurricane Fall Classic, taking the Flight B singles title.
Freshman Abby Smith boasts a record of 5-1, her only loss is to Scaglione.
