Women's Soccer Kicks Off The 2000 Season

CORAL GABLES, Fla.-The University of Miami women’s soccer team fell 4-2 Sunday afternoon to No. 10 Florida in front of a record-breaking crowd of 827 at Cobb Stadium in the 2000 season home opener.

Miami falls to 0-1 on the season, while the Gators improve to 1-1.

Freshman Nicole Safran (Harrison City, Penn.) scored the first goal for the Hurricanes at 34:31. Sophomore Lisa Gomez (Boca Raton, Fla.) scored the other UM goal on a penalty kick at 66:40.

Miami tied the game two times, Safran tied it 1-all to end the first half, and Gomez’s penalty kick tied the score 2-2.

The penalty kick was set up when UF goalkeeper Jordan Kellgren was accessed a red card for intentionally fouling Ashley West (Allen, Texas). The Gators were forced to play the final 24 minutes with 10 players.

UF Head Coach Becky Burleigh also received a red card at 88:00 and was forced to leave the field. Burleigh and Kellgren will both have to sit out the Gators next match on Friday against South Florida.

The Gators got two goals each from Andi Sellers and Karyn Hall. Sellers scored the first goal of the game for the Gators at 13:19. Hall got the next two goals for UF, hitting an eight-yard shot in the box at 47:12. She hit a penalty kick at 74:13 to earn the game-winning goal for the Gators. Sellers finished off UF’s scoring output at 82:46, heading the ball in for a goal off a Hall corner kick.

Miami was without last season’s leading scorer Allison McWhinney (Danvers, Massachusetts) and Nikki Mullan (Westin, Fla.) due to injury.

Miami will travel to face Florida Atlantic on Wednesday August 30 for a 7:30 p.m. matchup.
