Miami Men's Tennis Opens Against Providence

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 18th-ranked University of Miami men’s tennisteam will take on Providence in Friday’s quarterfinal round of the BIG EASTMen’s Tennis Championships starting at 9 a.m. at the Neil Schiff TennisCenter in Coral Gables.

Miami, the tournament’s top seed, received a first round bye.Ninth-seeded Providence advanced with a 4-1 win over No. 8 Boston CollegeThursday afternoon.

The Hurricanes are hosting the tournament for the eighth consecutiveseason. The Hurricanes have won five of the last seven BIG EASTChampionships.

Notre Dame, the defending champion and No. 2 seed, will also beginplay Friday against No. 10 Georgetown beginning at 3 p.m. Georgetown movedinto the quarterfinals with a 4-2 upset victory over No. 7 Villanova.

Miami and Notre Dame have dominated the BIG EAST over the lastseveral seasons. One of the two has won the championship every season since1993. The two have faced off for the championship in each of the last fourseasons with each school winning twice.

St. John’s, the No. 3 seed, will play sixth-seeded Connecticutstarting at noon at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park at Key Biscayne.Connecticut knocked off No. 11 Seton Hall 4-0 Thursday morning.
