Bowl Championship Series Selection Pool Announced

Nov. 18, 1999

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The Bowl Championship Series announced today the following institutions are under consideration for selection to the Nokia Sugar Bowl, Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, FedEx Orange Bowl, and Rose Bowl presented by AT&T.

Florida State, as the Atlantic Coast Conference representative, and Wisconsin, as the Big Ten Conference representative, have clinched berths in the BCS. The representatives from the other participating conferences (Big 12, Big East, Pac 10, SEC) which receive an automatic bid have not been determined. The following is a list of potential conference representatives (listed in alphabetical order):

Big 12: Kansas State, Nebraska, Texas

Big East: Boston College, Miami (Fla.), Virginia Tech

Pac 10: Oregon, Stanford, Washington

SEC: Alabama, Florida, Mississippi State

In addition to the potential conference champions, the at-large representatives under consideration are (listed in alphabetical order): Georgia Tech, Marshall, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State and Tennessee. All other institutions have been released for consideration by other bowls. To qualify for an at-large selection to a BCS bowl, teams shall have 9 regular-season wins and be ranked in the top 12 in the final BCS standings.

The selection process for the BCS bowls is as follows: Teams ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the final BCS standings will participate in the Sugar Bowl. The following conference representatives will serve as the host team in the respective BCS bowl games unless such team is ranked No.1 or No. 2 in the final BCS rankings: Rose Bowl (Pac-10/Big Ten), Fiesta Bowl (Big 12) and Orange Bowl (ACC or Big East, which will be determined after final BCS rankings). Should a bowl lose its host team(s) to the Sugar Bowl, such bowl(s) will be allowed first choice of the remaining teams (except host team of another bowl). The bowl losing the No. 1-ranked team shall have first choice and the bowl losing the No. 2-ranked team shall have second choice. Since the Sugar Bowl hosts the National Championship Game this season, the host team of the Sugar Bowl (SEC representative) is guaranteed selection in one of the BCS bowls. The Fiesta and Orange Bowls shall submit their preference of teams for the remaining two selections to the BCS. Such selections shall include any conference champion still available. Should the Fiesta and Orange Bowls select the same teams with their picks, the Fiesta Bowl would receive its selection.

Following this weekend’s games, the BCS will issue an update of the selection pool for the BCS bowl games.
