Bass, Gomez Named to All-BIG EAST Women's Soccer Team

Coral Gables, FL – University of Miami defenders Deidre Bass and Lisa Gomez were named to the 1999 All-BIG EAST Second team. Additionally, Gomez was also selected to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team.

Bass, a sophomore from Coral Springs (Stoneman-Douglas HS), is the lone player on the UM roster to have started in all 39 games during the program’s first two seasons of varsity competition. This past season, she finished tied for third on the team with 18 points off of seven goals and four assists. Three of her goals were game winners, in addition to recording one game winning assist. As a freshman, Bass was selected to Soccer Buzz website All-National Second Team for first-year programs.

Gomez, a freshman from Boca Raton (Spanish River HS), started all 20 games in 1999. She also finished with 18 points off of a team-best 10 assists and four goals. Most recently, she had the second-best offensive day by a UM player as she recorded three goals and two assists in UM’s 7-0 shut out win over Boise State in the ’99 regular season finale.

The 1999 season was the first season of competition in the BIG EAST Conference for the Hurricanes (12-8-0, 2-3 BIG EAST). In its second season of varsity competition, Miami won more games than its 1998 overall total (11-7-1) and qualified for the eight-team post season BIG EAST Championships. UM finished fourth in the six-team BIG EAST Northeast Division and played at No. 6 Notre Dame (L, 5-0) in a quarterfinal match-up.
