Oct. 31, 1999

Coral Gables, FL – CORAL GABLES, FL – Freshman Lisa Gomez totaled three goals and two assists, including the game winning assist, in leading the University of Miami women’s soccer team (12-7) to a 7-0 shut out victory over visiting Boise State (6-12-1) at Cobb Stadium on the UM campus.

Sophomore Deidre Bass scored the eventual game winning goal in the fifth minute of play, when she headed in a Gomez corner kick to the back of the Boise State net. The goal was Bass’ seventh on the season and also her third game winning goal. Gomez’ assist was her team-high ninth on the season.

In the 22nd minute, Gomez started her hat trick performance when she took an Alexis MacKenzie pass from the right side and shot past a diving Boise State keeper Jeanne Curtice to the lower left.

Sophomore Sharon Williams added the team’s third goal of the game, her first on the season, when she lifted a Gomez pass in the box over BSU’s Curtice at 24:10.

Miami took a 3-0 lead into the half, while holding the Broncos without a shot during the first 45 minutes of play.

In the second half, Gomez scored UM’s fourth (50:59) and fifth (53:22) goals during a three minute span to give her the hat trick. Gomez is just the second player in this season to tally three goals in one game (Jenny Sanchez vs. FAU). Senior Nina Wathne and sophomore Jordan Sims added the assists on the Gomez goals, respectively.

MacKenzie headed in UM’s sixth goal in the 57th minute off a Sharon Williams cross pass in front of the BSU keeper. It was MacKenzie’s fourth goal of the season.

Wathne, the team’s lone senior making her final appearance at Cobb Stadium, scored the Hurricanes’ final goal at 63:12 when she beat the BSU keeper one-on-one off a pass from Laura West.

The Hurricanes, who’ve recorded 10 shut out wins in 12 victories, completed the 1999 regular season with a 12-7 record, as compared to their inaugural record of 11-7-1 last season. For the game, UM outshot BSU 20-10 and held a 6-2 advantage on corner kicks. Next up for UM is No. 6 Notre Dame on Tuesday, Nov. 2 in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Women’s Soccer Championships, held at Alumni Field in South Bend, IN.
