Oct. 22, 1999
Pittsburgh, PA – The University of Miami women’s soccer team (10-6) earned its ninth shut out of the season with a 2-0 victory over BIG EAST Mid-Atlantic division member Pittsburgh at Pitt Stadium.
In the match, UM senior midfielder Nina Wathne scored both of the Hurricanes goals to lead Miami over the Panthers. The match was played on artificial turf, a first for the Miami soccer program.
In the 24th minute, sophomore midfielder Sharon Williams (Hialeah/Hialeah Miami Lakes) sent a long ball deep into the Panthers territory, while Wathne broke free from her Pittsburgh defender. The ball took a high bounce on the hard surface enabling Wathne to get behind the Pitt goalkeeper Nicole Basher and head in the score.
In the second half, Wathne scored in the 56th minute from eight yards out off an assist from freshman forward Allison McWhinney. Following a corner kick taken by freshman defender Lisa Gomez (Boca Raton/Spanish River), McWhinney found the ball during a scramble and sent it out to Wathne. Wathne dribbled to her right and cleared a hard shot past a diving Bashor for the Hurricanes second score.
The win over Pittsburgh marked UM’s second over a BIG EAST Mid-Atlantic division member. Miami defeated West Virginia, 1-0, at Cobb Stadium on Oct. 16. The Hurricanes next travel to No. 6 Notre Dame on Sunday, Oct. 24.
