Hurricanes Travel To Pittsburgh, No. 6 Notre Dame

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team (9-6,2-3 BIG EAST Northeast) hit the road this weekend for a pair of matches atBIG EAST Mid-Atlantic Division members Pittsburgh and No. 6 Notre Dame.
The Hurricanes, who are led in scoring by freshman forward AllisonMcWhinney (Danvers, MA – 21 points, 8 goals, 5 assists), have faired well onthe road this season. UM has forged a 3-2 mark in matches played away fromCobb Stadium, which includes a 3-1 mark in away matches and a 0-1 record inneutral site games. Most recently, UM split a pair of road matches atProvidence (W, 2-0) and then No. 18 Boston College (L, 0-3).
On Friday, Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m., the Hurricanes take on Pittsburgh(5-9-1, 1-4-1 BIG EAST Mid-Atlantic) at Nichols Field in Pitt Stadium. ThePanthers place seventh in the seven-team Mid-Atlantic Division and are ledin scoring by freshman forward Kristin Gellatly (15 points, 7 goals, 1assist).
On Sunday, Oct. 24 at 12 p.m., UM plays at Notre Dame (11-3, 6-0 BIGEAST Mid-Atlantic) at Alumni Field. The Irish finished first in itsdivision and will again face the Hurricanes in the first round of the BIGEAST Championship at South Bend, IN on Nov. 2. ND is led by severalAll-Americans, including Jenny Heft (20 points, 9 goals, 2 assists), JennyStreiffer (16 points, 4 goals, 8 assists) and goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene(11-3 record, 1.13 GAA, .723 GS%).
By way of Syracuse’ 0-0 scoreless tie at St. John’s, Miami clinchedfourth place in the Northeast Division and earned a trip to the BIG EASTChampionships in its first season of league play. Other than McWhinney,sophomore defender Deidre Bass places second on the team in scoring (14points) with five goals and four assists. Lone senior Nina Wathne has 10points, including three game winning goals, off of four goals and twoassists.
UM returns to Cobb Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 27 against FloridaInternational. The match with FIU was rescheduled from Sept. 14 due to theeffects of Hurricane Floyd.
