Soccer Shuts Out WVU

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team (9-5) opened up play in the Miami Invitational with a 1-0 shut out of BIG EAST Mid-Atlantic Division member West Virginia at Cobb stadium.
Senior captain Nina Wathne broke a scoreless tie in the 52nd minute of play with her game-winning goal off a double assist from freshman defender Lisa Gomez and sophomore forward Dierdre Foster. On the play, Gomez stole the ball deep in the WVU backfield and dribble to midfield, where she passed it to Foster. Foster quick touched the pass to Wathne, who scorched a shot past WVU keeper Melissa Haire to the top left of the box from 15 yards out.
Wathne now leads the team with three game-winning goals on the season and five on her UM career. With the assist, Gomez extended her team-lead to seven assists. The assist was also Fosters’ second on the season.
Elizabeth Swinson recorded the shut out in goal for the Hurricanes, her fourth on the season. Swinson also totaled three saves to Haire’s two.
Miami out-shot West Virginia 9-8 on the match and held a 3-0 advantage on corner kicks.
