Canes Knock Off Red Storm In BIG EAST Match

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team (8-4,2-2 BIG EAST) knocked off St. John’s (6-4-1, 0-3 BIG EAST), 1-0, in a BIGEAST Northeast Division match at Cobb Stadium.
The Hurricanes lone score came from sophomore defender Deidre Bass(Coral Springs/Stoneman-Douglas) in the 23rd minute of play off an assistfrom freshman forward Allison McWhinney. McWhinney stole the ball from theRed Storm defense and passed the ball to Bass on 2-on-1 break away. Bassscored from 10 yards out, beating St. John’s goalkeeper Kristina Fogg downthe center of the net.
Bass’ score, her fifth on the season, ties her for the team lead ingame-winning goals (2), while McWhinney’s fifth assist on the season wasalso her team-best second game-winner. St. John’s Fogg totaled eight savesin goal, while UM’s sophomore keeper Elizabeth Swinson (Boca Raton/BocaRaton HS) had four saves while recording her third shutout on the year.
Miami held the offensive advantage over St. John’s with an 18-9margin in shots on goal and a 6-1 margin in corner kicks. In the 80thminute, Red Storm defender Anne Johnston picked up a red card for fightingand was ejected.
The win marked UM’s first over a BIG EAST opponent at Cobb Stadiumand pushed their conference mark to 2-2 on the year.
Miami returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. against No. 19Connecticut at Cobb Stadium.
