BRODERICK FALLS IN MIDWEST BLAST FINAL
Champaign, IL – University of Miami’s Alanna Broderick advanced to the finals of the Midwest Blast hosted by the University of Illinois on Sunday where she fell to Marine Piriou of Northwestern, 6-4, 6-1. The loss ended a four-win streak for Broderick who advanced after defeating Anne Savitskaya of Clemson in the semifinals 3-6, 6-2 (7-0).
Broderick, a junior from St. Andrew, Jamaica collected wins over Sunnie Harmon from Clemson (6-0, 6-2), Illinois’ Natalia Manasova (retired) and Laurence Jayet (6-1, 6-3) from Clemson en route to her appearance in the semifinals and championship.
In other singles action, fourth seeded Katia Bogolomova was bounced in the first round, falling to Edina Fazlic of Illinois, 2-6, 6-3 (7-3) she then fell in the backdraw to Iowa’s Shera Wiegler 6-4, 6-1. Meredith Laughlin defeated BIIG EAST foe, No.57 Becky Varnum of Notre Dame, 6-2, 6-7 (7-4) before falling to Lia Jackson of Northwestern, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5. Senior Eva Jimenez fell to Katherine Nasser of Northwester, 6-4, 7-5 and defeated Danielle Lund of Michigan 6-4, 6-2. Jimenez was then eliminated by Wiegler, 6-1, 6-4. Freshman Igne DeVilliers defeated Michigan’s Maya Canfield 6-0, 7-5 before falling to Savitskaya, 6-2, 6-1. Classmate Lauren Scaglione lost to Michigan’s Joanne Musgrove (7-5, 2-6 (7-4) and Illinois’ Michelle Webb in the backdraw, 6-2, 7-5.
The Hurricanes take to the road next weekend and will travel to Tallahassee to compete in the FSU Fall Classic on October 15-17.
