Syracuse Stops Miami In BIG EAST Match

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team (7-4-0, 1-2BIG EAST) dropped its BIG EAST home opener to visiting Syracuse, 6-2, atCobb Stadium.

The Orangewomen (7-4-1, 1-1 BIG EAST) scored four first half goals, two offpenalty kicks, to pull away from the Hurricanes early. Sixth-year seniorWhitney Cali, junior Trisha Burke and senior Jenna Szyluk each scored a goaland an assist for SU in the first half. Sophomore Candy Reich added SU’slone other first half score.

Miami scored both of its goals in the second half. UM sophomore defenderDeidre Bass broke the Syracuse shutout bid with her score in 48th minute,off an assist from senior midfielder Nina Wathne.

The Hurricanes second score came in the last minute of play when sophomoremidfielder Jordan Sims scored off a loose ball following a UM corner kick.Freshman defender Lisa Gomez sent in the corner kick, which Bass headed toSims, who deflected the shot past SU goalkeeper Jeanie King.

SU broke open a scoreless game in the 16th minute, when Szyluk raced downthe right side and drilled the ball to the top left portion of the goal from15 yards out past UM keeper Rachel Elsby.

Less than five minutes later, SU got back on the scoreboard when Cali tappedin a deflected shot from Burch at 20:14.

The third Syracuse score came off a penalty kick from within the UM goalbox. UM was called on an illegal back pass, which gave SU the very closeopportunity. With nearly the entire UM team lined up on the UM goal line,SU’s Cali tapped a pass to Burch who firmly sent the ball to the upperportion of the net from three feet out.

Just before halftime, in the 43rd minute, SU closed out first half scoringwhen Reich took a cross pass from Szyluk and scored from 10 yards out.

Following Bass’ goal to break the shutout attempt SU’s Erin O’Grady scoredon a penalty kick in the 55th minute.

Burch finished the SU scoring on an unassisted shot in the 79th minute fromthe right side to the top left portion of the goal.

Miami returns to action on Friday, Oct. 8 as the Hurricanes host visitingSt. John’s in a BIG EAST match at 4 p.m. at Cobb Stadium.
