Women's Soccer Hosts Syracuse In Big East Play

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team (7-3, 1-1 BIGEAST) host Syracuse (6-4-1, 0-1 BIG EAST) in a BIG EAST match on Sunday,Oct. 2, at 1 p.m. at Cobb Stadium on the UM campus.
The Hurricanes enter the match with a 1-1 record in BIG EAST action, whilethe Orangewomen are 0-1. In its BIG EAST opener, UM defeated Providence,2-0, on the road. Miami then fell to then-No. 18 Boston College, 3-0, toclose out the Northeast road trip. Syracuse fell to Connecticut, 4-2, inits lone conference game on Sept. 26.
Miami last defeated Division II No. 1 Lynn on Sept. 29, while theOrangewomen shutout Florida International, 1-0, on Oct. 1.
UM is led by forward Allison McWhinney, who has eight goals and four assistson the season. The freshman from Danvers, MA has scored a goal in eight ofMiami’s 10 matches, including game winning goals over Long Island andProvidence.
Sophomore Jenny Sanchez, 1998’s goal and point scorer, places second on theteam with 11 points off of five goals and one assist. Sanchez set a newteam record with four goals and nine overall points in a single-game duringUM’s 6-2 victory over Florida Atlantic on Sept. 10.
As a team, UM has allowed a one-goal per game average so far this seasonbehind the goalkeeping of sophomore’s Rachel Elsby and Elizabeth Swinson.In six starts, Elsby has recorded four shutouts with a 1.07 goals againstaverage. Swinson, in four starts, has two shutouts and a 1.18 goals againstaverage.
Cobb Stadium is located on UM’s Coral Gables campus, between the HechtAthletic Center and Mark Light Baseball Stadium. Admission is free.
