Newcomers Make Impact For Hurricanes

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Several newcomers to the UM roster have made animpact on the Hurricanes’ scoring this season.

Allison McWhinney leads the team with 12 points on a team-best fivegoals with two assists. She tallied the game winning goal in UM’s 2-0 shutout of Long Island on Aug. 31. In addition, McWhinney has set a new UMrecord for consecutive games with a goal to five, with one in each of UM’sfirst five contests.

Lisa Gomez has a team-high five assists on the season. She also hasan active UM record for consecutive games with an assist. Gomez hasassisted on UM goals in the last four contests. Gomez is tied for seventhnationally and leads the BIG EAST with her five assists. Gomez had the gamewinning assist on McWhinney’s goal that defeated Long Island.

Prior to her knee injury, Alexis MacKenzie totaled four points inthe first five games with one goal and two assists. MacKenzie had the gamewinning assist on Jordan Sims’ goal that defeated Maine, 2-0, on Sept. 4.

Jordan Sims has totaled three points in the first five games on onegoal and one assist. Each of her scores were game winning, as her goal wasthe decisive edge at Maine, while her assist on Deidre Bass’ goal defeatedher former team, Florida State, in the season-opener on Aug. 29 inTallahassee.

Laura West scored her first point for UM on an assist in UM’s 6-2win over Florida Atlantic. West and McWhinney assisted on Jenny Sanchez’first of four goals agains the Owls.

Samantha Herndandez and Ashley West have yet to notch points for UM,but have started in each of the Hurricanes first five games on the season,along with newcomers Gomez, MacKenzie and Laura West.

HURRICANES SECOND-YEAR ROSTER BOASTS 13 NEW FACES: Of the 24 rosteredplayers on the Miami women’s soccer roster, just 11 remain from the 1998Inaugural squad. Thirteen newcomers grace the UM roster in ’99, includingfour sophomore transfers.

In addition, inaugural squad member Jana Escribano will be makingher collegiate debut in ’99 after redshirting last season with an ankleinjury.

HURRICANES HAVE FAIRED WELL ON THE ROAD: So far this season, the Hurricaneshave gone 2-1 on the road, defeating FSU, 3-0, in Tallahassee, followed bya, 2-0, win at Maine and a loss to New Hampshire at Maine. The Hurricanesmoved their all-time road record to 5-3 (including neutral sites). In itsinaugural season, UM forged a 3-2 mark with wins at Stetson, FIU and FAU.

ELSBY SHUTS OUT SEMINOLES IN 3-0 WIN: Goalkeeper Rachel Elsby recorded 10saves in the Hurricanes 3-0 win over FSU, while also defending the Seminoles23 overall shots on goal. The 10 saves tied her career-best, from lastseason’s win at Jacksonville.

UM, ELSBY RECORD SHUTOUT NO. 2 AGAINST LONG ISLAND: The Hurricane defensewas in full force against Long Island, as the UM “D” held LIU without a shotthe entire first half en route to a 2-0 win. Miami, which scored both ofits goals in the first half, outshot the Blackbirds 6-0 in the first halfand 14-7 for the game. Rachel Elsby recorded three saves in the game.

HURRICANES CONTINUE SHUT OUT STREAK WITH 2-0 WIN AT MAINE: The Hurricaneswon their third consecutive match to start the season with a 2-0 shut out ofMaine in the first match of the Black Bear Invitational in Orono. UMoutshot the Black Bears 26-13, including goals from Jordan Sims and AllisonMcWhinney. Sims, a transfer from FSU, scored her first collegiate goal offan assist from Florida transfer Alexis MacKenzie. Goalkeeper Rachel Elsbyrecorded three saves in the win.

UM KEEPS EDGE IN ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST FLORIDA STATE: Miami defeatedFlorida State, 3-0, to open the season on August 29. It marked theHurricanes second win over the Seminoles in as many seasons, moving theshort-lived team’s all-time mark to 2-0 against FSU. UM defeated FSU, 4-2,at Gulliver Prep in its inaugural 1998 season.

BASS AND ELSBY KEEP STARTING STREAK ALIVE: Sophomores Deidre Bass (D) andRachel Elsby (GK) are the lone members of UM’s inaugural team have startedin the program’s all-time 24 matches.

SIMS ENJOYS RETURN TO TALLAHASSEE: Sophomore midfielder Jordan Sims playedher first season at Florida State, appearing in eight games. As a starterfor the Hurricanes in 1999, Sims had the game winning assist against theSeminoles in UM’s season opening, 3-0, win in Tallahassee on Aug. 29.

BASS STARTS 1999 SEASON STRONG: Sophomore defender Deidre Bass had onepoint playing in the UM defense in 1998, an assist on a goal against Eckerd.So far this season, Bass has scored two goals. Bass scored the ’99 season’sfirst goal and game-winner in UM’s 3-0 victory in Tallahassee and had UM’ssecond goal in its 2-0 win over Long Island.

UM PICKED FOURTH IN THE BIG EAST NORTHEAST DIVISION: In its first season ofcompetition in the BIG EAST, the Hurricanes were picked to finish fourth inthe Northeast Division behind Connecticut, Syracuse and Boston College.UConn and Syracuse both qualified for last season’s NCAA Tournament. Miamiwas picked ahead of St. John’s and Providence. Notre Dame was picked to winthe BIG EAST’s Mid-Atlantic division.

MIAMI, SANCHEZ SCORE GOALS AGAINST FLORIDA ATLANTIC: The Hurricanes tallieda new school-record six goals against Florida Atlantic on Sept. 10, all inthe first half. Of those six goals, sophomore forward Jenny Sanchez scoreda record four goals. In the game Sanchez recorded another team-best ninepoints.
