Women's Soccer Moves Up To No. 8 In Southeast Region

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – According to the latest NSCAA regional rankings,the University of Miami women’s soccer team (4-1) moved up to No. 8 in theSoutheast Region. The Hurricanes remained No. 8 in Soccer Buzz’ regionalrankings, as well.
Miami debuted at No. 9 in the NSCAA (National Soccer CoachesAssociation of America) regional rankings two weeks ago and remained at thatspot until defeating Florida Atlantic, 6-2, on Sept. 10.
In addition to climbing the regional rankings, UM leads the BIG EASTConference Northeast Division as conference action begins on Sept. 15.Miami’s four wins is ahead of St. John’s three, Boston College’s two andSyracuse’ one. Providence and UConn have yet to win this season. St.John’s takes on No. 12 Connecticut to start league action in Storrs, CT.
UM freshman Allison McWhinney is currently the BIG EAST’sthird-highest scorer with 12 points on the season, while sophomore forwardJenny Sanchez (nine points) is rated fifth. Freshman defender Lisa Gomez (five points) is tied for 16th in overallscoring, but her five assists on the season lead the Conference. Inaddition, Diedre Bass and Alexis MacKenzie (four points) are each tied for17th in scoring.
Goalkeeper Rachel Elsby is rated No. 4 in the BIG EAST with a 0.80goals against average per game, while her three shut outs are a league-high.Elsby also leads the BIG EAST in overall minutes played (450).
In other women’s soccer news, the Miami/Florida International matchscheduled for Sept. 14 at Cobb Stadium has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. onOct. 27. The originally scheduled match was postponed due to the impendingapproach of Hurricane Floyd. Miami will still face the University ofBuffalo (4-0) on Friday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. at Cobb Stadium.
