Women's Soccer Routs Florida Atlantic

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Sophomore forward Jenny Sanchez scored aUM-record four goals, all in the first half, as the Hurricanes (4-1) ralliedpast Florida Atlantic, 6-2, at Cobb Stadium on the UM campus.The overall goal total also surpasses the old school record of fivegoals, set three times during the 1998 season against Eckerd (5-2), FAU(5-4) and Nova Southeastern (5-0). Overall, UM has outscored the Owls 11-6over their first two meetings.
FAU scored first, in the ninth minute, off an unassisted shot byMelissa Bobby at 8:55. The Hurricanes quickly answered back at 11:52, whenAllison McWhinney dribbled a Sanchez pass by the Owls’ goalkeeper to eventhe game at 1-1. The score extended McWhinney’s school-record of fivestraight games with a goal.
Sanchez put UM ahead, 2-1, at 22:12 with a score off a deflectionfrom the FAU goalkeeper. Laura West had the initial shot that deflected offof FAU’s Karen Grosshandler, which McWhinney passed to Sanchez for thescore.
Less than a minute later Sanchez scored again, stretching the UMlead to 3-1, with an unassisted shot past a lunging Grosshandler to the topright corner.
FAU’s Bobby narrowed the UM lead to 3-2 at 24:24, with her secondunassisted score over the evening to the bottom right corner of the Miamigoal.
“Every game is a big game for us,” said UM head coach JimBlankenship. “It was very important for us to come out here and play strongsoccer. I was very pleased with the way our offense handled themselves outthere, as well as a solid performance by our (defense) backs.”Miami’s Alexis MacKenzie continued the Hurricane scoring as she beatGrosshandler to the low left corner off a deep pass from Lisa Gomez. Theassist stretched Lisa Gomez’ team-record to four straight games with anassist.
Sanchez scored a hat trick with her third goal at 34:30, putting UMahead 5-2, when she used her left foot to kick the ball over Grosshandlerfrom short distance. McWhinney was credited the assist on the play.
“I was angry that I hadn’t scored in our first four games,”commented Sanchez, UM’s leading goal and point scorer in 1998. “Maybe I wasin a slump. But, tonight I thought I played better.”
Sanchez closed out game-scoring with 42:33 remaining in the firsthalf, when she headed in her fourth goal of the evening off a cross passfrom Gomez.
