UM Drops First Match Of Season

ORONO, ME – Despite out-shooting New Hampshire 26-13, the Wildcatsdefeated Miami (3-1), 2-1, in the Black Bear Invitational at Alumni Field onthe University of Maine campus.

Freshman forward Allison McWhinney continued her scoring streak to fourstraight games with her goal in the 14th minute off an assist by Lisa Gomez.The score tied the match with UNH (1-1), which scored in the fourth minute.

New Hampshire started early, scoring at 3:17 with a header fromNicole Coupland off a cross pass from Angelina Alexakos. The score was thefirst on Miami after the Hurricanes had shut out their first threeopponents.

McWhinney tied the match at 13:16, when she took Gomez’ pass on theright side and dribbled it past UNH goalkeeper Stephanie Spring. With thescore, McWhinney took the overall team lead in shots (15), goals (4) andpoints (8).

At 33:05, UNH would score the eventual game-winner when Jess Halasheaded in a loose ball rebound that ricocheted off the cross bar. ChathamFlynn received the assist from the initial shot.

UNH held UM scoreless in the second half despite 13 shots on goal tothe Wildcats’ four.

Miami finished the Black Bear Invitational with a 1-1 record,defeating Maine, 2-0, on the first day.
