Hurricanes Open Season on the Road

CORAL GABLES, FL – The University of Miami women’s soccer team beginits second season of varsity action with a Sunday afternoon meeting againstFlorida State at 2:30 p.m. at the FSU Soccer/Softball Facility inTallahassee.
The Hurricanes completed their inaugural 1998 season with an 11-7-1overall record, including a 4-2 win over the Seminoles at Gulliver Prep inMiami. In the first-ever meeting between the two schools, UM’s BrookePosner came off the bench to score the eventual game-winner just before thefirst half came to a close.
Miami returns 11 players from last season’s roster and have added 13 newfaces.
Back from ’98 is top goal and point scorer Jenny Sanchez, as well as assistsleader and Soccer Buzz National Player of the Year for first-year programsNina Wathne. Sanchez and Wathne were also selected to Soccer Buzz’All-National First-Team for first-year programs, while Deidre Bass was asecond team selection.
Highlighting the Hurricane newcomers is junior transfer Alexis MacKenzie,who came to Coral Gables from the 1998 National Champion Florida Gators.MacKenzie was named the Gatorade/Florida High School Player of the Year in1998, while assisting St. Thomas Aquinas to an undefeated state championshipseason.
In addition to MacKenzie, UM adds former FSU midfielder Jordan Sims andLouisiana State goalkeeper Elizabeth Swinson, plus Miami Herald’s 1999Player of the Year Samantha Hernandez of Gulliver Prep.
