Two-A-Days Roll on for Hurricanes

Aug. 17, 1999

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 1999 University of Miami football teamcontinued pre-season preparation on Tuesday with two, two-hour practices infull pads at the Greentree Practice Facility.

The Hurricanes ran the inside run drill as well as 7-on-7 scrimmagework during the morning session. In the afternoon session, the ‘Canesfocused on special teams play, the two-minute drill and work within thered-zone.

After the day of practice, Head Coach Butch Davis spoke of the benefits ofhaving depth throughout the team. Miami has 82 scholarship players on itscurrent roster.

“In particular defensively, the added depth will be a real positive factor,”said Davis. “Now with some depth, we know that the defensive line can gofull speed and then we can bring in other players to give some qualityminutes. That was one of the major advantages of our teams in the 80’s,having quality depth along the defensive line.

“One of the other by-products of the depth is the quality of the scoutteam,” added Davis. “Now we should have some really talented playersrunning plays and simulating the opposition. In the past, we weren’ttwo-deep in some areas.”

On Wednesday at 8:30 a.m., the Hurricanes will hold a closed scrimmage atthe Orange Bowl scheduled for 60 plays. It will serve as an opportunity forthe ‘Canes to simulate actual game conditions at Miami’s home field.

“Our expectation is to go about 60 plays which would be theequivalent of playing one half of a football game,” said Davis. “We’ll doall the kicking situations that you would expect to have in an actual game.It also gives us a chance to work on our sideline substitutions and ourpress box communications.”

Following Wednesday’s scrimmage at the Orange Bowl, the Hurricanes return topractice with an afternoon workout at Greentree Practice Facility.Practices and scrimmages are closed to the public.
