FIU Slips By Miami, 1-0

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The inauguralUniversity of Miami women’ssoccer team fell to Florida International, 1-0, Saturday at GulliverAcademy. The Hurricanes conclude their season with a record of11-7-1,while the Golden Panthers finish 9-9.
The game’s lone goal cameat the 44:16 mark as the Hurricaneswere called for a hand ball in their own penalty box resulting in anFIUpenalty shot. Jennifer Lieb converted on the penalty kick forthedecisive goal.
Miami could not even thescore for the remainder of the matchdespite outshooting FIU, 8-3 in the second half. In total , theHurricanes outshot the Golden Panthers 17-11. UM Jennifer Sanchez(Ft.Lauderdale, FL/MAST Academy) attempted a game-high six shots.
The Hurricane defense wasled by Deidre Bass (Coral Springs,FL/Douglas), Deirdre “Poppy” Foster (Davie, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas)andLene Ostergard-Hansen. Miami held its opponents to one goal orless infour of the last five and in seven of this season’s 19 games.
Saturday’s result evenedthe season series between the twocrosstown rivals. The ‘Canes defeated the Panthers, 3-1 on September16at FIU.
The Hurricanes, under HeadCoach Jim Blankenship, conclude aninaugural season that included wins over established programs FloridaState and Kansas as well as FIU. In 1999, UM women’s soccer willenterthe BIG EAST Conference joining the likes of nationally rankedConnecticut and Notre Dame in league play.
