PITTSBURGH – Miami fell in Game 1 of its doubleheader with host Pittsburgh Friday, falling in the afternoon affair by a final score of 10-3 at Charles L. Cost Field.

The Panthers scored five early runs to take control and plated four more in the sixth to widen their lead.

The Hurricanes (15-19, 7-9 ACC) opened the scoring in the second on an RBI single from redshirt senior Edgar Michelangeli that plated sophomore Romy Gonzalez, who doubled to open the frame.

After a sacrifice bunt from redshirt senior Christopher Barr pushed Gonzalez into scoring position, Michelangeli ripped a pitch from Pitt starter Josh Mitchell to left-center for his first hit of the day.

The hosts wasted little time in responding, however, scoring five runs in the home half of the second to take control early.

A three-run triple from Nico Popa and a two-RBI single from Caleb Parry put Pittsburgh ahead and chased junior righthander Jesse Lepore (1-5) after just 1.2 innings.

Miami cut the deficit to 5-2 in the fourth, plating a run on an RBI groundout from junior Brandon Gali.

With the bases loaded on a single, hit batter and walk, Gali grounded out to the left side to score Michelangeli, who led off with a single.

The Hurricanes chased Mitchell just 3.0+ innings

Panthers reliever Sam Mersing (1-1) entered in relief and struck out Nico Baldor and Carl Chester to strand the bases loaded.

Pitt (15-15, 7-9 ACC) padded its lead with a four-run sixth inning.

Mersing pitched the final 5.2 innings to keep the Panthers ahead and allowed just one run.

An RBI single from Barr in the ninth scored junior Hunter Tackett for Miami’s final run of the opener.

With a leadoff single to open the game, senior Randy Batista reached base for the 13th straight game and extended his career-long hitting streak to seven games.

Game 2 of the doubleheader will commence approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of the series opener. The series finale is currently scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday.
