CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) – Brian Asbury scored 18 points and No. 22 Miami, energized by its first Top 25 ranking in five years, beat Stetson 89-53 on Monday night at the BankUnited Center.
Raymond Hicks had 15 points and James Dews added 14 for the Hurricanes (10-0), who opened the game with a 19-4 run. Asbury had nine points in the 6 1/2-minute burst.
Eric Diaz had 13 points for the Hatters (2-8), who lost their fourth straight game and eighth in their last 10.
Miami, which had five players score in double figures for the third time this season, was ranked for the final 12 weeks of the 2001-02 season, reaching as high as No. 12. Earning their 10th win of the season on Monday, it is the second time in program history the Hurricanes have gone 10-0.
Dews’ field goal with 11:13 remaining in the first half put Miami ahead 23-6. The Hatters were held without a field goal for a 5:51 stretch until A.J. Smith’s 3-pointer with 10:34 remaining cut Miami’s lead to 23-9.
Dwayne Collins’ basket gave the Hurricanes a 36-15 lead with 4:46 remaining in the half. Miami was ahead 42-25 at halftime.
Dews’ fourth and final 3-pointer of the game with 9:48 remaining increased Miami’s lead to 69-42. The Hurricanes enjoyed their first 30-point lead at 74-42 on Asbury’s 3-pointer with 8:39 left.
