Gil Signs With Cincinnati Reds

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Former University of Miami ace David Gil, a 3rd-round draft pick (No. 93 overall) by the Cincinnati Reds in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, has signed a professional contract with the organization. Gil is likely to be assigned to the Reds’ Class A Dayton (OH) Dragons of the Midwest League.
Gil, a right-handed pitcher out of Miami’s Christopher Columbus School, was previously selected in the seventh round by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 1999 Draft, but opted to return to Miami for his senior season.
Gil closed out his UM career with a 11-3 record in 2000 and was named to the Coral Gables Regional All-Tournament Team, as well as Louisville Slugger Second Team All-American. In four seasons at UM, the 2000 team captain totaled a 31-5 career record and places seventh with 312 career strikeouts. Additionally, Gil was twice selected as the Ron Fraser Pitcher of the Year honoree, chosen by the UM coaching staff.
Earlier during the off-season, junior right-fielder Manny Crespo and senior outfielder Mark Walker also signed professional contracts with Major League clubs. Crespo, a 14th-round selection by the Seattle Mariners, reported to the Class A Everett (WA) Aquasox. Walker, a 40th-round pick by the San Francisco Giants, was assigned to the Class A Salem-Keizer (OR) Volcanoes.
