THE MATCHUP:

            The University of Miami (4-3) faces nationally-ranked Georgia Tech (6-1) in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both schools.

            Georgia Tech, which is ranked No. 21 by the Associated Press and No. 24 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll, is coming off a 77-73 win over PennState Tuesday night in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

            The Yellow Jackets boast four players averaging in double-figures led by sophomore guard Lewis Clinch who ranks seventh in the ACC in scoring at 17.4 points per game.

            Georgia Tech has also been led by a pair of McDonald’s All-Americans in 6-8 freshman forward Thaddeus Young and 6-5 freshman guard Javaris Crittenton. Young ranks second on the team in scoring (14.2 ppg) while Crittenton ranks third in scoring (14.1 ppg) and is third in the league in assists (5.86 apg).

            The Hurricanes enter the contest with a 4-3 record following a 61-59 loss at Northwestern on Tuesday night. Sophomore Jack McClinton recorded his fourth straight game of 20-or-more points with a career-high 30.

            McClinton has scored in double-figures in all seven games this season and leads the ACC in scoring (20.9 ppg), three-point field goal percentage (.556) and three-point field goals per game (3.57).

            Also averaging in double-figures for the Hurricanes is sophomore Brian Asbury. Asbury ranks second on the team in both scoring (10.7 ppg) and rebounding (6.1 rpg), and leads the team is steals (1.43 spg).

            Senior center Anthony King has been monster on the glass pulling down an ACC best 10.1 rebounds per game. King also leads the team in blocks (1.86 bpg) and is the active ACC career leader in the category with 170.

            Miami’s defense is holding teams to just 39.8 percent shooting from the field. The Hurricanes are 3-0 at home this season and have defeated at least one ranked opponent in 11 of the last 12 seasons.

ACC-Big Ten Challenge

            Craig Moore scored a career-high 24 points and Northwestern survived a late surge to beat Miami 61-59 in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

            Miami’s Jack McClinton tied a career high with 30 points Tuesday night.

            Leading 50-47 with 5:56 left, Northwestern scored seven straight points. Kevin Coble finished a back-door pass with a layup and Moore hit his seventh three-pointer of the game. Then Tim Doyle made two free throws to give Northwestern a 57-47 lead with 3:42 left.

            McClinton quickly brought Miami back. He scored six consecutive points and then after Doyle hit a free throw for Northwestern, McClinton hit a three-pointer to cut the Wildcats lead to 58-56 with 1:05 left.

            Miami’s Brian Asbury sank another three-pointer to get the Hurricanes within 60-59 with 15.3 left. Miami put Jason Okrzesik on the line who made 1-of-2 free throws to make it 61-59. McClinton then missed a long three-point attempt in the final seconds.

 

LAST MEETING WITH GEORGIA TECH:

            Miami used a balanced scoring attack to overcome 27 points by Georgia Tech’s Anthony Morrow and beat the Yellow Jackets 70-53 at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.

            Guillermo Diaz scored 19 points to lead five Miami players scoring in double figures as the Hurricanes won their third straight game.

            Anthony King and Anthony Harris each had 11 points for Miami while Hite and Raymond Hicks each added 10. Ra’Sean Dickey added 13 points for Tech.

            Miami, which was tied 33-33 with Georgia Tech at the half, opened the second half with a 15-4 run to lead 48-37. It kept the lead in double figures the final 10 minutes, managing to work the clock with multiple passes but still stretch the lead.

 

A WIN OVER GEORGIA TECH WOULD:

THINGS TO KEEP AN EYE ON:

***Anthony Harris needs one assists to move all alone into ninth on UM’s all-time list. He enters the game tied with Jerome Scott (1988-92) with 257.

 

***Anthony Harris needs seven assists to move into eighth on UM’s all-time career list ahead of Michael Simmons who registered 263 assists from 1998-2003.

***With 20 points Jack McClinton would become the first Hurricane since Tim James in 1998-99 to record five straight 20-point games.

***With 30 points Jack McClinton would become the first person since Darius Rice in 2001-02 to record back-to-back 30-point games.

            Miami and Georgia Tech meet for the seventh time with the Yellow Jackets holding a 4-2 series lead. Last season the team’s met once with the Hurricanes coming away with a 70-53 win in Atlanta.

            The Miami-Georgia Tech is the ACC Sunday Night Game of the Week and will be televised live in Miami on FSN Florida. Ron Thulin will handle the play-by-play duties with Mike Gminski adding analysis and Deborah Antonelli serving as sideline reporter.

            The game can be heard on the Hurricane Radio Network, WQAM (560 AM). Joe Zagacki “The Voice of the Hurricanes” will call all the action with Josh Darrow adding analysis. Brian London will serve as studio host. The game can also be heard on the University of Miami Student Radio Network, WVUM (90.5 FM).

 

ON THE COACHES:

            Miami head coach Frank Haith is in his third season with the Hurricanes. His record career record is 38-32 (.543) including a 4-3 mark this season.

            Georgia Tech head coach Paul Hewitt is in his 7th season with the Yellow Jackets and 10th season overall. His record at Georgia Tech is 113-84 (.574) while his overall record stands at 179-11 (.617).

 

FOR OPENERS:

            The Hurricanes are 2-0 in ACC home openers since joining the conference in 2004 with both wins coming against ranked teams.  Miami defeated #24 North Carolina State, 67-66, in its first ACC home game on January 9, 2005. Last season the Miami defeated #14/#12 Maryland, 84-70, in its ACC home opener at the BankUnitedCenter.

 

VERSUS RANKED OPPONENTS:

            Miami is 24-39 (.381) versus ranked opponents since 1996-97. Miami has defeated at least one ranked team in 11 of the last 12 seasons. Miami is 33-104 (.241) all-time against ranked teams including a 29-90 (.244) record since the rebirth of the program in 1985. Miami is 4-7 against ranked teams in the BankUnitedCenter.

            Jack McClinton is off to one of the best offensive starts in recent memory. The sophomore has scored 143 points in the first seven games of the season marking the fourth highest total since UM reinstated its basketball program in 1985.

McCLINTON SHATTERS NOVEMBER RECORD:

            Sophomore Jack McClinton scored 143 points in the month of November to set a UM scoring record for that month. The 143 points surpasses the old record of 109 set by Guillermo Diaz last season. McClinton’s 20.9 scoring average ranks third all-time at UM in the month of November.

A MORE BALANCED ATTACK:

            Miami may only have two players averaging in double-figures but a closer look shows that the Hurricanes’ offense has been more balanced than last season. In four of Miami’s seven games this season the Hurricanes have had four players in double-figures including one game with five scoring 10-or-more. In 34 games last season the Hurricanes had a total of six games with four scoring in double-figures including one with five.

 

TAKING IT INSIDE:

            The Hurricanes have made an effort to score in the paint this season. In four of seven games this season Miami has recorded 38-or-more points in the paint, and are 4-0 in those games. Last season Miami scored 35-or-more points in the paint only three times. Miami is averaging 33.85 points per game in the paint so far this season compared to 26.38 points per game last season.

 

BIG OFF THE BENCH:

            In its won over Lafayette Miami received 46 points from its bench marking the most bench points since February 8, 1994 when the Hurricanes scored 47 bench points in a 78-63 loss at St. John’s. Miami averaging 20.4 points per game off the bench this season compared to 12.9 last season.

 

CAN YOU SAY UNSELFISH:

            In Miami’s win over AlcornState the Hurricanes recorded 28 assists on 34 baskets. The 28 assists are the second highest total in school history and just one shy of the school record of 29 set against Lehigh on January 9, 1991. Overall the Hurricanes’ assists numbers are up from last season. Last season UM assisted on 11.73 baskets compared to 14.86 this season.

 

OFFENSIVELY SPEAKING:

            Since the 1998-99 season the Hurricanes are 45-4 (.917) when shooting 50 percent or better from the field. Miami is 11-0 when shooting 50 percent or better under head coach Frank Haith. Miami’s last loss when shooting over 50 percent was January 10, 2004 against Pittsburgh. That night the Panthers defeated the Hurricanes 84-80 in 2OT despite a 50.8 percent shooting performance by UM.
