Lavassas and Moore Make History for Hurricanes in Boston and Clemson

The University of Miami track and field team completed the first day of the Tiger Paw Invitational and David Hemery Valentine Invitational, hosted in Clemson, South Carolina, and Boston, Massachusetts.

Junior distance runner Daphnee Lavassas improved on her 5000m school record by an impressive 24 seconds in Boston, clocking a final time of 15:54.09. The Athens, Greece native’s previous 5000m indoor school record of 16:18.29 was achieved at last year’s ACC Indoor Championships in Louisville, Kentucky.

Senior jumper Ashley Moore brought the best performance of her career to the women’s long jump, ending with a final distance of 6.38m. Moore’s distance ,now ranked fourth in indoor school history, was good for a third-place finish in Clemson.

Senior hurdler Sincere Rhea went toe-to-toe with the nation’s best 60m hurdlers — clocking 7.91 in the quarter finals and 7.75 in the semifinals.

Freshman thrower Calea Jackson and freshman sprinter/jumper Ashton Torns both continue to progress as the duo registered two new personal bests in Clemson. Jackson ended the weight throw with a mark of 18.45m while Torns finished the 60m with 6.80.

Saturday’s events in Clemson are set to kick off at 10 a.m. with the women’s shot put and high jump, while the Hurricanes in Boston will begin at 9 a.m. with the men’s 5000m.
