Ajagbe Paces Canes at East Prelims, Clinching Third NCAA Outdoor Berth
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Debbie Ajagbe clinched her third 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships berth – this time in the discus – to pace the Miami women’s track and field team on the fourth and final day of the NCAA East Preliminary at Indiana University’s Haugh Track & Field Complex.
Ajagbe’s discus throw of 52.74m sends her to nationals for her third event after earlier qualifying for the hammer throw and shot put.
“Obviously for Debbie to have the weekend she had was phenomenal,” Associate Head Coach Cory Young said. “To start it off with the hammer and have a huge PR and then to come back that same day and make it in the shot was amazing. She fought through today in the discus and still punched her ticket there.
“Three for three for anybody is amazing. I am super proud of her and super proud of what she’s done for us. I can’t wait to see what she does in Oregon.”
Ajagbe is one of three Hurricanes who qualified for the NCAA outdoor meet, which takes place June 8-11 in Eugene, Ore. Moriah Oliveira qualified in the 400 meters and Alfreda Steele in the 100m. Oliveira ran 52.04 in the 400m to advance, and Steele ran a season-best 11.27 in the 100m to punch her ticket to nationals. Steele just missed out on qualifying in the 200m, placing 14th.
Kayla Johnson (800m), Ashley Moore (triple jump), Jacious Sears (100m) and the Canes’ 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams also competed Saturday for Miami.
