Arreaga, Chambers Close Out Season at NCAA Championships

AUSTIN, Texas – Kevin Arreaga and Raheem Chambers of the Miami track and field program concluded their outdoor seasons on Wednesday at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Arreaga was the lone Hurricane in action in the field events at Mike A. Meyers Stadium on the opening day of competition and finished 10th with his throw of 68.32m in the men’s hammer throw.

The sophomore was the first competitor to throw in Flight 1 and recorded a mark of 67.39m. His second throw earned him a top-10 finish for the second-straight season, as he also finished 10th last year. Arreaga was one spot shy of reaching the finals when Denzel Comenentia of Georgia’s final throw of 72.93m knocked him out of the top nine finalists.

Arreaga added to an already impressive resume with the Canes, finishing second at the ACC Outdoor Championships in the event. Arreaga also set a personal-best and program-best mark at 71.07m in the hammer at the Power 5 Trailblazer Challenge. Arreaga earned ACC Performer of the Week honors for that performance.

Chambers closed out his inaugural season with the Canes, finishing 17th overall in the men’s 100m dash with a time of 10.19 seconds. The junior made a name for himself with the Canes during the outdoor season, as Chambers ran Miami’s second-fastest time in the 100m with his time of 10.09 seconds, which he set at the ACC Outdoor Championships.

Chambers earned the silver medal in the event and also helped the Canes earn a bronze medal in the 4×100 relay. Chambers garnered one ACC Track Performer of the Week honor during the outdoor season.

Miami will feature four individual events and two relays Thursday, as the women will see the track for the first time this championship meet. The women’s 4×100 relay will start it off for the Canes at 7:02 p.m., while the 4×400 relay will close them out at 10:18 p.m.

Tiara McMinn will be the first individual up, competing in the women’s 100m hurdles at 8:02 p.m. McMinn returns to the track after boasting a personal-best time of 12.86 seconds at the East Prelims.

Brittny Ellis will be next in line in the women’s 400m dash at 8:30 p.m., followed by Kayla Johnson in the women’s 800m. Samantha Gonzalez will be the final Cane to compete as she’s scheduled to run in the women’s 400m hurdles at 9 p.m.
