W. Tennis Selected to 24th Straight NCAA Tournament

CORAL GABLES, Fla. The University of Miami women’s tennis team is headed to the NCAA Team Championship for the 24th consecutive season.

Ranked No. 19 nationally, Miami (18-7, 9-5 ACC) will begin play in Stillwater, Okla., against No. 34-ranked Washington State Friday in the opening round of the tournament.

In the other Round of 64 matchup at Greenwood Tennis Center, the host school, Oklahoma State, seeded No. 15 and ranked No. 14, meets Central Arkansas. The winners of each match will square off Saturday for a berth in the Super Regionals.

The Hurricanes, who are in the field for the 34th time in the 38-year NCAA era, own a 53-33 all-time record in the tournament. They have reached the second round each of the last 17 seasons, dating back to head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews’ first at the helm, and made the Sweet 16 in 12 of the past 13. Their 24 straight berths are tied with Northwestern for the 10th-longest active streak in the nation.

Miami features one ranked singles player, with junior Estela Perez-Somarriba placing second in the country. The Hurricanes also sport one ranked doubles pair, as freshman Daevenia Achong and senior Daniella Roldan check in at No. 16.

Washington State heads into NCAA play at 19-10 (3-7 P12) on the season. The Cougars have one ranked singles player in Michaela Bayerlova at No. 32 in the country. In doubles, Tiffany Mylonas and Hikaru Soto form the Cougars’ lone ranked pair, coming in at No. 41.

Oklahoma State is 19-7 (8-1 B12) entering the NCAA Team Championship. The Cowgirls have three ranked singles players, led by Katarina Stresnakova at No. 27. She is followed by Marina Guinart at No. 92 and Bunyawi Thamchaiwat at No. 95.

Central Arkansas sports a 20-7 (9-2 Southland) record thus far in 2019. The Bears do not have any ranked singles players or doubles duos.
