Perez-Somarriba Selected as ACC Player of the Week
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the first time this season and fifth in her stellar career, Estela Perez-Somarriba of the University of Miami women’s tennis team is the ACC Player of the Week.
A junior who garnered the distinction on four occasions last year, Perez-Somarriba’s selection was announced Tuesday afternoon by the league office. She shared the recognition with Ellyse Hamlin of third-ranked Duke.
The reigning ACC Player of the Year, Perez-Somarriba helped No. 27 Miami (11-3, 4-2 ACC) to a perfect 3-0 week that included a pair of wins over ranked ACC foes. She went 3-0 at the top spot in singles, dropping just 11 total games across six sets, at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
In a 5-2 triumph Friday morning over No. 42 Notre Dame, Perez-Somarriba teamed with sophomore Ulyana Shirokova with a 6-1 decision over Brooke Broda and Bess Waldram in doubles. She then cruised to an impressive 6-1, 6-0 victory against No. 58 Zoe Spence in singles play.
The Madrid native tallied two more wins Friday evening in a 4-0 win against Boston University. She paired with Shirokova for a 6-0 result versus Lily Buchell and Remi Ramos in doubles, before picking up a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Ramos in singles.
Lastly, Perez-Somarriba aided the Hurricanes to a 6-1 decision against No. 31 Georgia Tech Sunday morning. After suffering her lone defeat of the week in doubles action, the two-time ITA All-American responded with a superb showing in singles to lock up a 6-4, 6-3 win against No. 11 Kenya Jones, her first top-15 triumph of the spring.
Perez-Somarriba and the Hurricanes will be back in action Friday at 3 p.m. when they square off with No. 12 NC State in Raleigh, N.C.
