MBB Plays Wake Forest Tuesday in ACC Tournament

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s basketball team begins postseason play Tuesday when it battles Wake Forest in the first round of the ACC Tournament at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C. Game time is noon. The matchup between the 12th-seeded Hurricanes and 13th-seeded Demon Deacons serves as the opening game in the tournament.
ESPN and Raycom affiliates have the television broadcast. The game also streams online via the WatchESPN app and at TheACC.com.
The Canes’ radio broadcast airs locally on WQAM 560-AM and also streams on HurricaneSports.com, Radio.com and the TuneIn app.
The winner Tuesday advances to play fifth-seeded Virginia Tech in the second round at approximately 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Things To Know
• Miami is 14-13 all-time in the ACC Tournament. The Canes won at least one game in the tournament in six of head coach Jim Larrañaga’s first seven seasons at the helm.
• Miami is the only power conference team with five players each averaging at least 11 points per game.
• Over the last nine games, Anthony Lawrence II is averaging 14.7 ppg, 9.0 rpg and 3.9 apg. He owns four double-doubles in the last five games.
• Chris Lykes is 10th in the ACC in overall scoring (16.2 ppg) and finished eighth in conference play (15.9 ppg).
• Ebuka Izundu leads the ACC and is sixth nationally in offensive rebounds (109, 3.63/game).
• Zach Johnson is one of 14 players nationally with 1,700 career points and 350 assists.
In its last game on Friday, Miami lost at No. 15 Virginia Tech, 84-70. Lykes led Miami with 16 points and a career-high nine assists, while Izundu also scored 16 points on 8-of-8 shooting. Lawrence recorded 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Lykes leads the Hurricanes in scoring, while Lawrence (12.6), Johnson (12.1), Dejan Vasiljevic (11.3) and Izundu (11.2) also are averaging in double figures this season. They also each averaged in double figures in conference play. As a team the Canes are scoring 72.1 ppg this year and giving up 71.1 ppg.
Wake Forest lost at home to No. 14 Florida State Saturday, 65-57. Brandon Childress leads the team in scoring at 14.7 ppg, while Jaylen Hoard averages 13.0 ppg and a team-high 7.6 rpg. Wake Forest averages 68.3 ppg and allows 75.5 ppg.
Competing in its 15th ACC Tournament, Miami is 14-13 all-time in the event. The Canes are the No. 12 seed for the third time (2007, 2010). As the 12-seed in 2010, UM upset the No. 5 seed (Wake Forest) and No. 4 seed (Virginia Tech) en route to a semifinal appearance.
In head coach Jim Larrañaga’s tenure, Miami is 8-6 in the ACC Tournament, winning at least one game in each of the first six seasons. UM has won at least one game in the tournament in 11 of 14 seasons.
Wake Forest holds a 12-10 edge in the all-time series with Miami. The series is tied 10-10, since entering the ACC in 2004-05. The teams have met just once previously in the ACC Tournament, an 83-62 upset win for the 12th-seeded Hurricanes over fifth-seeded Wake Forest on March 11, 2010, in the first round in Greensboro. Larrañaga is 5-5 in his career against Wake Forest, including 5-4 while at Miami.
