Quartet of Hurricanes in National Rankings
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Four members of the University of Miami men’s tennis team were highlighted in the Oracle/ITA Division I National Preseason rankings, as announced Tuesday by the ITA.
Ranked No. 41, sophomore Adria Soriano-Barrera finds himself in the top 50 of the 125-player singles rankings after completing his freshman campaign ranked No. 77 in the country, the best mark by a Miami freshman since 2002. A Second Team All-ACC pick, the Barcelona, Spain, native went 13-8 in dual matches, including notching a 9-5 mark at the No. 2 spot.
Joining Soriano in the singles rankings, sophomore Bojan Jankulovski enters the 2018-19 season ranked No. 92.
Last spring, Jankulovski led the Canes with a 20-6 record, including a team-best 9-2 mark in ACC action. Playing in the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 spots, the lefty was responsible for clinching a pair of Hurricanes’ victories over top-25 teams, grabbing the decisive victories against No. 23 NC State and No. 22 Duke.
Junior Stephen Madonia and Soriano form the nation’s 51st-ranked doubles tandem, heading into their first season as teammates.
During the 2017-18 season, Soriano paired with graduate Christian Langmo. The duo earned the program’s first NCAA Doubles Championship victory in a decade, concluding the year ranked No. 23.
In the preseason freshmen/newcomers rankings, freshman Francisco Bastias ranks 10th, trailing only one ACC newcomer, North Carolina’s Brian Cernoch, in the rankings.
The Hurricanes, who went 15-13 (4-8 ACC) and reached the NCAA Team Championship for the first time since 2011, begin fall competition Sept. 14-16 at the Alabama Crimson Tide Four-in-the-Fall
