Introducing U: Kara Borden
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – One of 10 newcomers on the University of Miami soccer team, Kara Borden is quickly getting used to her new surroundings in South Florida.
A 5-foot-7-inch forward from South Orange, N.J., the Hun School graduate took the time to speak with HurricaneSports.com about her opening weeks at The U, what she has enjoyed the most so far and more…
Q: To start off, you have been at Miami for almost a month now. How has the experience been thus far?
A: The first couple of days were really stressful. I was so overwhelmed, because I had so many meetings and everything. But now since it’s been almost a month, it is starting to feel normal, more like home. I actually really enjoy my days here now.
Q: What has been the most enjoyable aspect?
A: Honestly meeting the team and just being around them. Super quickly we have just clicked and everybody is so nice and welcoming. I have already been out with them, and I just really like them and enjoy their company.
Q: How would you describe yourself as a soccer player?
A: I’d say I am very supportive on the field, and very talkative.
Q: What do you think you need to work on the most?
A: I think I need to work on personal self-confidence. I can get down on myself really quickly. If I mess up a play, it stays in my head. And then I will do worse. But I just have to stay focused on the positives and make sure I get better as a player. Because mistakes should not define you, and they should not define me.
Q: Do you know what you want to major in and, if so, how did you decide that?
A: Yes! I am majoring in exercise science and minoring in psychology. And I actually think, now that I have been in the PT [Physical Therapy] room, I kind of want to do something down that alley. Like be an athletic trainer.
Q: What made you decide Miami was the school for you?
A: I visited, I think it was my freshman year, and I fell in love with the campus and everything. And then I went to a camp my sophomore year, and it was the same thing. I just loved it. Everyone was just so nice and welcoming. I would walk around campus and would get so many “hi’s” and everyone was really nice and I just knew this was the place for me.
