Rowing Wins Two Petite Finals at ACC Championships
CLEMSON, S.C. — The University of Miami rowing team won a pair of petite finals at the 2018 ACC Rowing Championships.
Five Hurricane boats competed on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C. Both heats and finals were held on Sunday, with the heats beginning at 8:05 a.m., and the finals starting in the evening at 5:35 p.m. The top three boats in each heat advanced to the Grand Final in their respective events, while all other boats moved on to the Petite Final.
“The athletes did a good job shifting gears from the heat to set up good performances in the petite finals,” Miami head rowing coach Dave Sanderson said. “The athletes showed resiliency, racing to some solid results in the petites tonight. The 2V Four did a great job moving away from the field to win their petite final. The 1V Eight also did a good job in their petite final, rowing a poised race, six seconds faster than this morning, to cross the line first. Programmatically, it’s an improvement from last year and I’m excited to keep developing for the future.”
Miami’s First Varsity Eight was the Canes’ top boat at the ACC Championships, winning the 1V8+ Petite Final over North Carolina and Boston College with a time of 6:35.613. The 1V8+ finished fourth in Heat 2 of its event with a time of 6:41.461, advancing to the First Varsity Eight Petite Final.
The Second Varsity Four was the second UM boat to finish first in its final race of the championships, winning its Petite Final with a time of 7:32.617 and finishing ahead of boats from Boston College and North Carolina. The 2V4+ was fourth in Heat 2 of its event with a time of 7:31.327, earning a spot in the Petite Final.
Miami’s Third Varsity Eight was fourth in Heat 1 of its event, posting a time of 7:13.629 to advance to the petite final. The Hurricanes then went on to place second in the 3V8+ Petite final with a time of 7:13.273, finishing behind Clemson and ahead of Boston College.
The Hurricanes’ First Varsity Four also moved on to the petite final after it posted a time of 7:39.368 to finish fifth in Heat 1. The Canes top four boat then placed third in its petite final with a time of 7:38.080.
The Second Varsity Eight was fifth in the first heat of its event, posting a time of 6:52.496 that sent the Canes to the petite final in that event. Miami’s 2V8+ then turned in a time of 6:53.881 to finish third in the petite final.
The Hurricanes finished the 2018 ACC Rowing Championships with a team score of 22 points that placed Miami tied for eighth place with Boston College.
Kathleen Hanson was named to the All-ACC Rowing Second Team following the conclusion of the 2018 conference championship regatta.
