Rowing Impresses With Seven First Place Finishes Across Both Coasts

SACRAMENTO, Calif. & KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. – On a Saturday that featured Canes on both coasts, Miami rowing excelled on the water once again, recording a historic day with seven first place finishes between a split squad that competed at the Lake Natoma Invite (Sacramento, Calif.) and the Miami International Invite. One of the day’s highlights was a sweep of No. 20 UCLA.

UM won six races in Sacramento, while Miami earned another top time in the local meet at the Miami Marine Stadium. The sweep of No. 20 UCLA was the program’s first sweep of NCAA events against a ranked team. It was also the second time Miami has defeated a ranked Pac-12 program after topping No. 20 Oregon State in the 1v4 this season.

Out West

Out west, Miami earned first place in six of eight races, defeating the likes of Loyola Marymount, Sacramento State, Gonzaga and No. 20 UCLA in the process. The Canes’ second varsity eight and first varsity four boats won both of their races against LMU and Sacramento State in the morning. They would follow up with first place times against Gonzaga and UCLA in the afternoon.

“The second varsity eight and first varsity four boats were lights out and fantastic today,” head coach James Mulcahy said. “They fought hard and put up solid races that we can feel good about and build on. It was a great team effort today as we want to give a lot of thanks to Gonzaga and Sacramento State for hosting the regatta.”

The first varsity eight and second varsity four swept their morning sessions against LMU and Sac State respectively. The 1v8 boat would defeat No. 20 UCLA once again in the afternoon before coming up just short against Gonzaga. The 2v4 rounded out its day against the No. 20 Bruins and Bulldogs.

Morning Conditions: 4000 cfs Wind variable starting 3-4 mph crosstail, shifting to 6-8 crosswind to 8mph crosshead
Afternoon Conditions: crosshead to direct headwind 6-9 mph all racing

The day started with a large victory in the third varsity eight. Miami would finish over 29 seconds ahead of Nova Southeastern, along with Barry who would pull up in third place. The morning was capped with a third place time in the third varsity four.

Miami gets nearly three weeks off from competition as it prepares for the Lake Wheeler Invite April 26-27 in Raleigh, N.C.
