W. Tennis Hosts No. 22 UCF in NCAA Round of 32
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team will play its final home match of the season Saturday against No. 22 UCF in the second round of the NCAA Team Championship.
No. 16-ranked and No. 16-seeded Miami (17-7, 11-3 ACC) will face the Knights at 11 a.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center with a berth in the Sweet 16 on the line. Live stats for the contest can be found HERE.
The Hurricanes are 10-0 all-time against UCF with all 10 matches in Coral Gables and half coming via shutout. The teams have not met since Feb. 27, 2011, when Miami registered a 7-0 victory.
Miami, which has never faced UCF in postseason competition, is 52-32 all-time in NCAA Team Championship action, including 24-1 at home. The Hurricanes are seeking their 12th Sweet 16 appearance in the last 13 years.
In the opening round of NCAA play, UCF topped No. 39 FIU, 4-3, for the program’s first NCAA Team Championship victory, while Miami defeated LIU Brooklyn, 4-0, to reach the Round of 32 for the 17th straight season.
Led by 17th-year head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews, the Hurricanes have two individuals in the Oracle/ITA singles rankings. Sophomore Estela Perez-Somarriba, the ACC Player of the Year, is third nationally, while senior Sinead Lohan, a fellow former NCAA Singles Championship semifinalist, is No. 69.
Miami also has two ranked doubles pairs, both of which feature Perez-Somarriba. The Madrid native holds the No. 51 spot with junior Ana Madcur and comes in at No. 68 with junior Daniella Roldan.
UCF is 20-4 (5-1 AAC) on the season with three wins in non-conference action over teams currently in the top 25. The Knights do not have any ranked singles players, but do have a ranked doubles duo, as Ksenia Kuznetsova and Maria Martinez sit at No. 61 nationally.
Saturday’s victor will head to Winston-Salem, N.C., for a May 17 matchup in the Sweet 16 against either second-ranked and top-seeded Vanderbilt or No. 41 Clemson. To view the complete tournament draw, click HERE.
