Canes Track Closes Out Florida Relays

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field program closed out the 2018 Pepsi Florida Relays with a strong day on the track and in the field events.
 
The Hurricanes had two women’s relays in action on Saturday at Percy Beard Track and both teams earned top 5 finishes in their respective events.
 
Miami was second in the women’s 4x100m relay, as Kristina Knott, Alfreda Steele, Symone Mason and Tiara McMinn combined to run a time of 43.76 seconds.
 
The Canes took fourth in the women’s 4x400m relay, as Mason, Samantha Gonzalez, Michelle Atherley and Kayla Johnson teamed up to post a time of 3:33.19.
 
Miami also had a great day in the field events, as three throwers combined to earn fourth top-10 finishes.
 
The Canes had a strong performance in the women’s shot put, as Debbie Ajagbe led the way with a fourth-place finish with a personal-best mark of 15.17m. Zakiya Rashid also earned a top 10 finish, placing eighth with a throw of 14.59m.
 
Gian Piero Ragonesi had an excellent day in the throws, finishing fourth in the men’s invite shot put with a season-best throw of 18.67m. The senior also finished seventh in the men’s invite discus with a mark of 56.02m.
 
Darlene Charles had a solid showing in the women’s triple jump, placing ninth with a season-best mark of 12.39m.
 
Celine Thompson finished 15th in the women’s high jump with a mark of 1.65m.

Following this weekend’s action, the Hurricanes will return home for consecutive meets at Cobb Stadium. Miami will host the Hurricane Alumni Invitational on April 6-7 and the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational on April 14.
