Monroe's Contract Extended Through 2020
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami Director of Athletics Blake James announced Monday a four-year contract extension for head soccer coach Mary-Frances Monroe.
The new deal for Monroe, who completed her fourth season at Miami in 2016, goes through the 2020 campaign.
“Coach Monroe has demonstrated the commitment to achieving excellence that Miami pursues every day and she is a valued member of our family,” James said. “We look forward to her continued leadership of our women’s soccer program and supporting her efforts of building champions, in academics, athletics and life.”
In 2016, Monroe led the Hurricanes to one of the finest seasons in program history. Picked last in the ACC preseason poll, Miami finished in seventh place and earned a spot in the ACC Championship for the fifth time, including the first since 2012.
Miami went 10-8-1 (5-5-0), tying for the third-most wins in a year in program history and setting a school record for conference victories, regardless of league affiliation. The Hurricanes set new top marks for fewest goals allowed (16) and lowest goals against average (0.82). Miami posted two top-25 victories during the season, downing second-ranked Virginia and No. 25 Virginia Tech.
“I want to thank Blake James for his continued support of our women’s soccer program. We have grown a lot the last few years and I am really excited to see what our future holds,” Monroe said. “I am proud of my entire staff for the work that they do day in and day out to continue to make strides in a positive direction while we compete at the highest level. This contract extension shows the commitment that The U has for our staff and we are excited about our future as a program.”
During her tenure in Coral Gables, Monroe has guided the Hurricanes to a pair of top-five wins, one shy of the program’s total prior to her arrival. Monroe, a former U.S. Women’s National Team player, has 11 years of head coaching experience, spending the first seven seasons of her career at Albany.
