Reed Named All-ACC and to All-Defensive Team
University of Miami senior guard Davon Reed earned third team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors, as well as a spot on the ACC All-Defensive Team, the league announced Feb. 5.
Reed ended the season 17th in scoring, 25th in rebounding, third in minutes played, sixth in free throw percentage, eighth in 3-pointers made per game and 10th in 3-point field goal percentage in ACC games. In league games, he averaged 16.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.2 steals and 0.5 blocks in 36.7 minutes per game. He hit 42.9 percent of his shots from the field, including 40.4 percent from three and 85.7 percent at the line. Reed scored 20-plus points in six outings, grabbed at least six rebounds nine times and had three or more assists in 11 games.
Defensively, Reed helped Miami to the second-best mark in the ACC in points allowed, and 18th in the nation (third in the ACC) in defensive efficiency.
Since the arrival of Coach Jim Larrañaga for the 2011-12 season, Miami has had one ACC Player of the Year, one ACC Defensive Player of the Year, one ACC Tournament MVP, four ACC All-Tournament, one first-team All-ACC, two second-team All-ACC, five third-team All-ACC, six honorable mention All-ACC, one ACC All-Rookie Team and six ACC All-Defensive Team players. Larrañaga has been named the ACC Coach of the Year twice.
This week Reed, from Ewing, N.J., was named the 2017 Skip Prosser award recipient, recognizing the top scholar-athlete in the ACC. Reed will graduate in May with a degree in sports administration and double minors in communications and marketing. A three-time All-ACC Academic selection, he is also one of four of the league’s top 20 scorers to be named to the 2017 All-ACC Academic Team.
Named an ACC Postgraduate Scholar for the 2016-17 Academic Year, Reed is also a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court. He has been named Academic All-District 4 by the College Sports Information Directors of America, which makes him eligible for Academic All-America honors. Reed has been named to the Dean’s List, Athletics Director honor roll and is a Book Buster at Miami, and is a member of the university’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
In addition, Reed is an elementary school pen pal, has volunteered at the Miami Rescue Mission Homeless Shelter and is an intern in the athletics marketing department.
Davon Reed is known as Mr. Dependable on the men’s basketball team, due to his professionalism in his daily life and the consistent leadership he provides to his teammates. He chose to attend the University of Miami for its mix of academics as well as athletics, after attending Princeton Day School, where his peers are accepted to Ivy League schools. As a sophomore Reed was dealt an injury that could have cost him an entire season, but with his work ethic and determination, he only missed eight games that season.
Miami opens the ACC Tournament on Wednesday, March 8 at the 9-seed, and will face 8-seed Syracuse at noon. Catch the game on ESPN and ACC Network.
