Brown Named ACC Freshman of the Week
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami freshman guard Bruce Brown has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Brown had ice in his veins in pair of Miami wins against nationally ranked teams this week, knocking down the game-winning 3-pointer in overtime at No. 18/19 Virginia, then scoring 25 points in the Canes’ win over No. 10/11 Duke.
This week Brown averaged 19.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.5 blocks in 40.0 minutes per game. He was 52.0 percent (13-25) from the field, 33.3 percent (2-6) from three and 91.7 percent (11-12) at the line.
Against No. 10/11 Duke, the 6-foot-5 Brown had 25 points, four assists, four rebounds, two blocks and two steals in 36 minutes. He shot 61.1 percent (11-18) from the field, was 1-of-2 from three and 2-of-2 at the line. Brown shot 11-of-18 and had four assists, while his teammates shot just 11-of-40 with four assists combined. Brown scored or had the assist on nine of Miami’s first 11 field goals.
At No. 18/19 Virginia, Brown hit the game-winning dagger, a 3-pointer with 19 seconds left in overtime. He had 14 points, three rebounds, two steals and a block.
In 70 total minutes against No. 9/6 North Carolina (Jan. 28) and No. 10/11 Duke (Feb. 25), Brown tallied 55 points, nine assists, eight rebounds, four blocks and four steals. He had 30 points, five assists, four rebounds, two blocks and two steals in 34 minutes against UNC.
This season, Brown has one triple double, a pair of double-doubles and six games with at least five points, five rebounds and five assists.
Brown and the Hurricanes face Virginia Tech tonight, Feb. 27, at 9 p.m. on ESPN2 Big Monday.
