Reed Named to Academic All-District Team
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami senior guard Davon Reed was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District 4 men’s basketball team, as announced by CoSIDA on Thursday.
The award recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. First-team Academic All-District™ honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America® honorees will be selected later this month.
Reed, from Ewing, N.J., is majoring in sports administration with a double minor in communications and marketing. He has been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court, is a two-time All-ACC Academic Team honoree and has been listed on the All-ACC Academic Honor Roll all three seasons at Miami. Reed serves as a men’s basketball representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at the university and has been nominated for both the Senior CLASS award and the Allstate NABC Good Works Team.
Along with playing on the men’s basketball team, Reed also works in the athletics marketing department, assisting with the execution of strategic marketing plans for all sports at the university. For three years he has served as an elementary school pen pal, writing letters to local students, promoting the importance of academics while striving for professional dreams, in any field of work. Reed has also volunteered in the community at the Miami Rescue Mission Homeless Shelter. In the summer, Reed gives back to local youth by working as a counselor at the Jim Larrañaga Basketball Camp, providing leadership to campers through recreational endeavors.
On the court, Reed leads the Hurricanes with his 15.9 points per game, and earlier this season he joined Miami’s 1,000-point club. He has knocked down 48 shots from long range in the past 15 games, hitting seven at NC State and five against both Duke and FAU. For the year, he is 61-146 (41.8%) from downtown, hitting multiple 3-pointers in 17 outings, including three-or-more 11 times. Reed has hit at least one three in every game this season (23 games).
Among ACC players, he is second in 3-pointers made, fifth in free throw percentage, sixth in minutes played, eighth in 3-point field goal percentage and 12th in scoring.
Reed and Cameron Johnson of Pittsburgh (District 2) are the only two Atlantic Coast Conference student-athletes to receive the academic recognition. District 4 honorees include student-athletes from teams in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Puerto Rico. Reed was joined by Evan Bailey of Charleston, Canyon Barry of Florida, Nock Masterson of Kennesaw State and Juwan Parker of Georgia on the first team.
The Academic All-District™ teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the sixth year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America® Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools. The Division II and III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2016-17 DII and DIII Academic All-America® teams program.
