The Matchup Between Miami and Florida

This ia the third straight year the Canes and Gators have met on the hardwood. The last time that happened was from 1986 to 1988.
In the last two meetings against Florida, Miami has shot a combined 45.7% (16-of-35) from three-point range.
LarraƱaga vs. Florida
Coach Jim LarraƱaga led his Miami team to a pair of wins over Florida in Gainesville (2014) and in Coral Gables (2015).
In 2006, LarraƱaga led George Mason to the NCAA Final Four, falling, 70-58, to the eventual champion Gators, after defeating powerhouses Connecticut, Wichita State, North Carolina and Michigan State.
Milestones for the Canes
1,000 Games – Coach LarraƱaga opened the 2016-17 season just 21 shy of 1,000 career games coached. Miami’s 21st game of the season is vs. Florida State on Feb. 1. He has coached 53 games at American International, 314 at Bowling Green, 437 at Geoge Mason and now 179 at Miami.
1,000 Program Wins – The University of Miami men’s basketball program has won 994 of its 1,722 games.
600 Victories – Coach LarraƱaga is just eight wins shy of 600 career victories. With 600 wins, he will be one of five ACC coaches with 600 victories, and the other four men are in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
100 Blocks – Redshirt senior Kamari Murphy has recorded 94 career blocks, with 61 at Oklahoma State and 33 at Miami.
1,000 Points – Senior Davon Reed has scored 908 points in 103 career games at The U.
100 Games – Seniors Kamari Murphy and Davon Reed each played in their 100th career game at North Florida on Nov. 16, 2016. Murphy, a redshirt senior, played in 66 games at Oklahoma State before coming to Miami as a junior. All of Reed’s games played are at UM.
Canes Producing Balanced Scoring Attack
Miami has seven players scoring at least 7.4 points per game, and three guys with at least 9.0 ppg. Ja’Quan Newton leads the way with 17.6 ppg, followed by 11.2 from Davon Reed.
Eight of nine eligible scholarship players have scored in double digits at least once, with Rodney Miller’s five points vs. WCU being his season high. Five guys have scored at least 15 points: Newton, Anthony Lawrence, Reed, Bruce Brown and Dewan Huell.
Miami in the AdvoCare Invitational
Junior PG Ja’Quan Newton is averaging 20.5 ppg, knocking down 59.3 percent (16-27) from the field in a pair of games at the AdvoCare Invitational. During the tournament, Newton has tallied two of his three career 20-point games with 20 against Stanford and 21 vs. No. 21/22 Iowa State. .
Senior F Kamari Murphy is pulling down 9.5 rpg, with 12 against ISU. Freshman G Bruce Brown has 13 total rebounds and Anthony Lawrence has five steals.
After starting the season averaging 86.7 points per game through the first three outings, Miami is scoring just 61.5 ppg in a pair of games in Orlando.

Through five games, Miami averages 9.0 ppg and shoots 14.7 percent better in the second half of outings than in the first half.
Miami Puts it on the Floor Instead of Letting it Fly
Through five games, Miami has made 26 3-pointers and recorded 52 assists. One season ago through five outings, the Canes had made 49 from long range and tallied 78 assists.

Miamiās win is the second-straight over the Gators, defeating the then-No. 8/7 Florida in 2014, 69-67, in Gainesville … The then-named-BankUnited Center was filled with 7,972 fans, marking the ninth time in school history for a sellout … Miamiās starters against Florida were Angel Rodriguez, Sheldon McClellan, Davon Reed, Kamari Murphy and Tonye Jekiri … Freshman Anthony Lawrence sat out of the game with flu-like symptoms … With the win over Florida, Miami is now 82-36 while ranked in the top 25 all-time. In 2014, Rodriguez plays D, Drains 24 in Win Over Florida
PG Angel Rodriguez scored 22 his 24 points in the final nine minutes against No. 8/7 Florida, draining five 3-pointers in the last seven minutes to help Miami to the win. Rodriguez also showed his strong defense by drawing a charge with three seconds remaining in the game. In 36 minutes, Rodriguez totaled three assists, three steals and two rebounds with his 7-14 shooting, hitting five from distance, and had a 5-7 mark at the free throw line.
Recapping Miami vs. Florida, Nov. 17, 2014
The Canes defeated then-No. 8/7 Florida on Nov. 17 in the Stephen C. OāConnell Center, led by Angel Rodriguezā 22 points in the final nine minutes, draining five 3-pointers in the last seven minutes to help Miami to the win. With the victory, the Canes snapped Floridaās 33-game home winning streak and 25-game home non-conference winning streak at the OāConnell Center. The 33-game streak was the third-longest in the country, behind 34 from both Duke and Stephen F. Austin. Miamiās last road win over a Top 10 team was Feb. 5, 2012 at No. 7/5 Duke (78-74, OT) … Miamiās last road win over a ranked team was Feb. 2, 2013 at No. 19 NC State (79-78) … Starters: Angel Rodriguez, Manu Lecomte, Sheldon McClellan, Joe Thomas and Tonye Jekiri … Angel Rodriguez scored 24 points his first 20-point game as a Cane, also topping his previous collegiate career-high.
