McClellan Signs on with Washington Wizards
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Miami Hurricanes shooting guard Sheldon McClellan will join the Washington Wizards for NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, the team announced July 5.
McClellan will play NBA Summer League games for the Wizards from Friday, July 8 through Monday, July 18 at the Thomas & Mack Center and Cox Pavilion on the campus of the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
According to the Wizards’ website: “The 23-year-old Miami product certainly is one of the most experienced rookies available as an undrafted free agent in 2016. In his senior season for the Canes, McClellan posted his best numbers across the board for his college career, shooting over 40 percent from 3-point range and over 50 percent from the field for the first time. Because of that experience, he certainly has the potential to become a valuable bench scorer fairly quickly. With much of the Washington bench up in the air this offseason, McClellan could be given a serious look to compete for one of those spots as an athletic wing scorer.”
A native of Houston, McClellan averaged 16.3 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.0 steals in 32.9 minutes per game for the Hurricanes last season. In 35 games played, he knocked down 50.4 percent of his shots from the field and led Miami to the NCAA Sweet 16 and a tie for second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
For his senior season performance, he was named to the NABC All-District II Second Team and to the All-ACC Second Team. In a pair of seasons in Coral Gables, McClellan was named to the watch lists for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award, the Naismith Trophy and the Riley Wallace Award. He was also listed on the all-tournament team for the 2016 ACC Championships, the 2015 Puerto Rico Tip-Off and the 2015 NIT.
In his senior campaign McClellan was the seventh-most efficient offensive player in the nation among players with 20 percent-or-more possessions used, according to KenPom.com. He was also the third-most efficient player in the ACC overall, and No. 26 in the nation. McClellan was 17th in the ACC (league games only) in 2-point field goal percentage (54.6), ninth in true shooting percentage (60.7) and 10th in free throw percentage (83.5). In addition he finished fourth in the ACC in turnover rate (9.6). Overall, McClellan hit 56.8 percent of his shots from two, 40.6 percent from three and 83.8 percent at the line, adding up to 181.2, above the prestigious 180 mark.
