Miami Basketball Inks Home-and-Home with GWU
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s basketball team has signed a home-and-home series over the next two seasons with George Washington University, Head Coach Jim Larrañaga announced Thursday.
The Hurricanes will host the Colonials in Coral Gables on Dec. 22, 2016, then will play in Washington, D.C., in mid-December of 2017, with the date to be announced at a later time.
“In December we will host George Washington University here at the BankUnited Center,” Larrañaga said. “The Colonials are the reigning NIT Champion and a perennial contender in the Atlantic-10 Conference. They will be a very strong opponent for us late in the non-conference schedule, just before we begin ACC play.”
In December 2017, Miami will travel to Washington, D.C., for the third time in five seasons to play the second of the two-game series. The Canes have previously played in the D.C. area for the 2013 NCAA Sweet 16 and the 2016 ACC Tournament. Larrañaga is very familiar with the area after coaching at George Mason University for 14 seasons from 1997-2011.
Miami last faced George Washington in the first round of the 2013 Wooden Legacy in Anaheim, Calif. The Canes lost, 71-63, in overtime to the Colonials. UM is 0-3 all-time against GWU, with a two-point road loss in 1971 and a defeat in the 1991 Palm Beach Classic.
This fall the Canes are also playing in the AdvoCare Invitational in Orlando, Fla., Nov. 24, 25 and 27, and will host Rutgers on Nov. 30 in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. Miami’s complete non-conference schedule will be released later in the summer.
