Wagner, Lohan and Zhang Named ITA All-Americans
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Three members of the University of Miami women’s tennis team garnered a total of four 2016 ITA All-America honors, as announced Thursday.
Senior Stephanie Wagner was tabbed as an ITA All-American in both singles and doubles, while sophomore Sinead Lohan earned the title in singles and sophomore Wendy Zhang was recognized in doubles.
This is the first time since 2010 Miami received four ITA All-America accolades and also the first time since 2010 that three Hurricanes were on the list. Just six schools had three players named ITA All-Americans and only five teams received a total of four honors.
“I’m so proud of these players,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “Earning All-American honors is a tough thing to do. I think it really shows the level of commitment they put in this season.”
The winningest singles player in program history with 134 victories, Wagner was named a singles All-American for the second consecutive year after finishing the season ranked No. 10 in the country. Wagner and Zhang received their doubles honor after concluding the year eighth nationally.
Wagner is the ninth player in program history to have at least three ITA All-America honors and the eighth to receive the recognition in both singles and doubles during her career. The last player to be an All-American in both singles and doubles the same year was Bianca Eichkorn in 2011.
A native of Amberg, Germany, Wagner posted records of 35-13 (22-7 spring) in singles and 20-12 (17-9 spring) in 2015-16. She is among just seven players to receive All-America honors in both categories, including one of only two seniors in the group.
Lohan was tabbed as an All-American in singles for the second time in as many years at Miami. She and Wagner are the 14th and 15th multi-time ITA All-Americans in program history. Additionally, Lohan is the sixth Hurricane to earn the recognition as both a freshman and sophomore—just the fifth to do so in singles both years—and the first since current associate head Laura Vallverdu in 2007 and 2008.
An NCAA Singles Championship semifinalist, Lohan concluded the season ranked sixth in the nation in singles. The Waterford, Ireland, native recorded an overall mark of 40-6 (29-2 spring) to tie for the third-most singles wins in a campaign in program history.
Zhang is the27th Hurricane to be named an ITA All-American (1982-present) and 32nd overall to earn an All-America honor. Zhang and Wagner debuted in the Oracle/ITA national doubles rankings Feb. 10 at No. 12 and did not fall out of the top dozen the rest of the spring.
In 2015-16, Zhang tallied a 26-11 (17-9) doubles record, good for the most victories on the team. The Richmond, B.C, native is just the fourth Hurricane in the last five years to amass greater than 25 doubles wins in a season. Zhang and Wagner were selected for the NCAA Doubles Championship and posted 12 victories over ranked pairs en route to their No. 8 final ranking.
Miami led the ACC in both total honors and number of players recognized. Only 23 schools in the nation had an ITA All-American and just 16 had multiple. Miami, California, Florida, Georgia and Michigan were the five teams with four total accolades and three honorees, while Arizona State also had a trio of players on the list.
In addition, Lohan and Zhang were among just 13 sophomores in the country named ITA All-Americans.
This is the third straight year, and 12th time in the past 13 seasons, Miami has had at least one ITA All-American, as well as the ninth time in the past 12 years multiple Hurricanes have received the honor. Yaroshuk-Tews has now coached 14 players to a total of 24 ITA All-America recognitions.
