@CanesWTennis Opens ACC Championship vs. Syracuse

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team will open play in the 2016 ACC Championship Friday at 9 a.m., against Syracuse at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.

The quarterfinal match between the seventh-ranked and second-seeded Hurricanes and the No. 27-ranked and seventh-seeded Orange was moved up one hour from its initial start time due to weather concerns.

Miami (17-4, 12-2 ACC), which received a double bye and is seeded No. 2 in the field for the third year in a row, is 13-10 all-time in the ACC Championship and won the title in 2013.

This will be the first ACC Championship meeting between Miami and Syracuse. The Hurricanes are 8-0 against the Orange overall and posted a 4-0 record in BIG EAST Championship play. In this year’s regular season contest between the teams on April 15, Miami earned a 6-1 home victory.

Syracuse (14-7, 7-7 ACC) defeated No. 35-ranked and tenth-seeded NC State, 4-3, Thursday in the second round of the ACC Championship. Second Team All-ACC honoree Anna Shkudun is the top-ranked singles player for the Orange, holding the No. 62 spot in the nation. Following her is Gabriela Knutson at No. 81.

In doubles, Knutson and Valeria Salazar of the Orange form the No. 33-ranked pair in the Oracle/ITA rankings.

As has been the case all season, head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews’ Hurricanes feature two singles players ranked in the top 10. Senior Stephanie Wagner and sophomore Sinead Lohan, both First Team All-ACC selections, check in at sixth and eighth in the country, respectively.

Yolimar Ogando is ranked No. 43 despite having not played at all this spring due to injury, while fellow sophomore Wendy Zhang, a Third Team All-ACC pick, sits at No. 61 nationally, tied for her best mark of the season.

Wagner and Zhang are the nation’s ninth-ranked doubles duo, while Wagner also teams with senior Clementina Riobueno in the No. 69 spot in the doubles rankings.
