Six Canes Garner "Who's Who Among Students" Honors

CORAL GABLES, Fla. Six University of Miami student-athletes were recognized Tuesday as Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities & Colleges recipients.

Rower Sarah Aschebrock, volleyball player Caitilin Donahoe, swimmer My Fridell, soccer player Shannon McCarthy, football player Sunny Odogwu and sprinter Anthony Wolliston were all honored. UM President Dr. Julio Frenk was among the speakers at the on-campus reception.

A prestigious honor conferred by greater than 1,000 colleges in the United States, each of which has a specific quota it can allot. The distinction, which was founded in 1934, considers a student’s GPA, community involvement, future leadership potential and participation in extracurricular activities.

“I am thrilled that these six accomplished students have received this illustrious national honor and distinction,” Miami Associate Athletic Director of Academic Services David Wyman said. “They have served as great ambassadors for our institution and I salute them for their commitment and dedication to their educational and athletic pursuits.”

Aschebrock, who has a 3.826 GPA while double majoring in criminology and sociology with a minor in psychology, has been a member of the 1V8+ since her freshman year. She helped the Hurricanes win the Cal Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic in 2013 and 2016. The North Shore, New Zealand, native is a two-time All-ACC Academic selection, a two-time CRCA Scholar Athlete and a member of the UM Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Executive Board.

A four-year member of the Hurricanes volleyball team, Donahoe helped Miami reach the NCAA Tournament in each of her four seasons in Coral Gables. The senior from Pompano Beach, Fla., has the second-most assists in a single match in UM history, recording 64 against Long Beach State in 2013. Donahoe is also a leader off the court, serving on the UM SAAC Executive Board. Donahoe has a 3.565 GPA and is a finance and marketing major with a minor in international studies.

Hailing from Helsingborg, Sweden, Fridell is a two-time team captain who swims the butterfly and freestyle for the Hurricanes. The senior was a CSCAA Scholar All-America Honorable Mention in 2015 and was a member of the All-ACC Academic Team in 2013. A public health major with minors in both psychology and management, Fridell has a 3.580 GPA at Miami. A member of UM’s SAAC, Fridell helped lead the Hurricanes to victories in four of their five dual meets this season.

A defender from Brighton, Mich., McCarthy started all 17 matches for the Hurricanes as a redshirt junior in 2015, coming off the field for just 16 total minutes. A two-time team co-captain, McCarthy graduated from Miami in December of 2015 with a 3.591 GPA after majoring in public relations and minoring in sport administration. McCarthy, now enrolled in UM’s sport administration graduate program, is a two-year member of the ACC SAAC, McCarthy was voted onto its executive board last fall.

Odogwu started nine of the Hurricanes’ 13 games as a redshirt sophomore during the 2015 campaign. The Ezeagu, Nigeria, native helped lead an offensive line unit that ranked eighth nationally in fewest tackles for loss allowed. Odogwu, who helped pave the way for the Hurricanes to gain over 400 yards of total offense six times last season, has a 3.155 GPA as a management major and is a member of UM’s SAAC.

Wolliston, from Snellville, Ga., owns the fifth-best outdoor 400m time in school history (47.89 seconds) and was on two of the top all-time men’s 4x400m relays. Wolliston, who has competed at the NCAA East Preliminary, is enrolled in a five-year biomedical engineering program, earning a 3.395 GPA during his four undergraduate years and a 3.783 thus far in his graduate studies.
