The Note
Senior guard Sheldon McClellan is the second-most efficient offensive player in the country, according to KenPom.com, among players used in 20 percent of possessions. McClellan has posted the seventh-best shooting percentage (53.4%) in the country among guards, and has the top shooting percentage among guards in the ACC, according to stats on NCAA.org on Feb. 11. McClellan’s 2-point shooting percentage is 61.8 percent this season.
The Houston native is currently on three national player of the year midseason watch lists: Naismith Trophy Men’s College Player of the Year, Oscar Robertson Trophy for Men’s National Player of the Year and Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award.
McClellan Most Efficient Player in the ACC
Senior Sheldon McClellan is the second most efficient player in the ACC and No. 10 in the nation, according to KenPom.com. He is also No. 2 in the nation among players with 20 percent-or-more possessions used. In two games last week, he hit 80 percent (12-15) of his shots from the field, was 4-of-4 from three and 6-of-8 at the line. At Georgia Tech, he posted his sixth 20-point game of the season. Miami is 6-0 when McClellan scores 20 points or more.
Canes 12th in Nation in FT Percentage
Miami has connected on 398-of-524 (76.0%) shots at the free throw line, while opponents have just 387 attempts at the charity stripe. UM averages 17.3 points per game at the line, and has posted a +11.9 scoring margin overall this season. Miami ranks 12th in the nation in free throw percentage. The Canes have drawn 449 fouls, while committing only 386, which ranks UM No. 20 in the country in fewest fouls.
Newton Best Sixth Man in the Country
Dick Vitale has lauded Miami sophomore Ja’Quan Newton as the “best sixth man in the country.” Newton has immensely improved his stats from last year, and has scored in double digits 18 times this season.
In Miami’s eight ACC victories Newton has averaged 12.6 points and 2.4 assists per game, hitting 52.2 percent from the field. In the Canes’ three losses he has put up 8.0 points and 1.3 assists per outing, knocking down only 30.8 percent of his shots.
Rodriguez Tops 500 Career Assists
Senior Angel Rodriguez has dished out 501 career assists, with 227 at Miami and 274 at Kansas State. In his last five games, the native of Puerto Rico has averaged 7.2 assists per game, with at least five per outing. He posted 11 assists vs. Duke and eight against Pittsburgh during that stretch.
Reed Making Moves
Junior Davon Reed has hit 50.0 percent from the field and 38.9 percent from three in the past five games for a 12.2 points per game average after starting the first six ACC games by shooting only 37.5 percent from the field and 31.8 percent from distance for a 9.2 ppg average. He also has just one turnover in the past five games after starting with 12 turnovers in the first six outings.
McClellan Closing in on 1,000 Points at Miami
Sheldon McClellan has tallied 921 points in 61 games at Miami. Added to his 843 points at Texas, he is also closing in on 2000 career points.
One More Victory For Miami
One more victory would give Coach Larrañaga his fourth 20-win season in five years at the U, and his 10th career 20-win season. It would be Miami’s seventh 20-win season since joining the ACC for the 2004-05 campaign.
Crazy Eights in ACC Play
Just 11 games into the league schedule, Miami has already won eight games in ACC play. In five seasons under Coach Jim Larrañaga, the Canes have won seven-or-more ACC games each season. Prior to the arrival of Coach L, Miami had eight wins or more in only one campaign, when UM was 8-8 in 2007-08.
Jekiri on the Boards
In 127 games at Miami senior Tonye Jekiri has grabbed 827 rebounds, eighth-most in Miami history. He has improved his rebounds per game from 1.6 as a rookie to 9.8 as a senior. He also has grabbed double-digit rebounds in 37 games over the past two seasons (60 games played), after doing so just three times in his first 67 outings.
