Miami Cracks Top 10 - Ranked No. 8/9
The 2015-16 University of Miami basketball team is ranked in the top 10 in the country for the first time since the 2012-13 season, earning the No. 8 position in the AP poll and No. 9 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll, on Jan. 11.
The Canes were last ranked in the top 10 in the postseason poll, March 18, 2013, when Miami was No. 5 in AP and No. 4 in the Coaches poll. That season, Miami entered the top 10 Feb. 4 with a No. 8 rank in the AP, but was No. 11 in the Coaches poll. On Feb. 12, Miami was top 10 in both polls, checking in at No. 3/4, and earning first place votes in both polls.
In 2012-13, Miami was ranked in the top 10 in both polls six-straight weeks from Feb. 12 through the postseason. Prior to that season, the Canes were only ranked in the top 10 in one other campaign since the rebirth of basketball at Miami for the 1985-86 season: In 1998-99, Miami was No. 9/10 on March 1, then No. 10/12 on March 8 in the postseason poll.
Miami has been ranked in the top 10 in both polls in just three seasons – 1998-99, 2012-13 and now 2015-16.
This is Miami’s eighth week in the polls this season. Miami opened the season receiving votes in the preseason poll, then jumped to No. 15/19 after defeating No. 16 Utah and No. 22/20 Butler in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. The Canes fell to No. 21 in both polls, announced Nov. 30, before moving back into the top 25, at No. 17/20 the week of Dec. 7. Miami was then No. 15/19 on Dec. 14, No. 13/16 on Dec. 21, No. 13/15 on Dec. 28, No. 12/11 Jan. 4 and now No. 8/9 on Jan. 11.
No. 8/9 Miami hits the road for three-straight ACC games over the next nine days, beginning with No. 13/11 Virginia in Charlottesville, Va., on Jan. 12 at 7 p.m.
